Almost all of these are standalone. Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Court of Owls (it was the start of a "reboot" of the series), The Long Halloween. As long as you know the basics, you're fine. Hush is a bit more set in regular continuity (Catwoman is an ally, not a villain) but nothing too intense. The Three Jokers may be a bit continuity-heavy; I had stopped reading by that point. I would put Year One, The Long Halloween (sort of a sequel),and The Dark Knight Returns (almost a epilogue at the top of the list). You could map Nolan's trilogy onto those books pretty easily.

I recommend all of these if you haven't read them before. Great prices on some of the most classic Batman stories of all time.

Absolute must-have stories for any Batman fan. This is truly top-notch work. The one and only reason that I wouldn't buy these is because I'd rather check them out from the local library than own the Kindle edition.

No matter how you get them, though, get them!

Reading the 30th anniversary on a Kindle Scribe. It's okay, but anything smaller would be tough I would think.

Read the Owls and it was ideal on an ipad.

Awesome. I havn't read Dark Knight Returns since comics came out in the 80s. Probably own the first printing and stored somewhere in the garage.

The inner monologue on the stairs in the construction site is my favorite of all time.

He first thinks if the ways to defend himself that kill, then the ones that cripple, then settles on the one that just hurts. The Dark Knight knows the bad stuff but selects not to use it.

Oh and the section about why his logo is yellow is also awesome.

I have them as first prints of individual issues and another hardback for reading. Frank Miller's Batman story is great and I recommend reading if you aren't familiar.

all the nolan films used this material as inspiration, along with year 1, those are the best works of modern batman mythology. This is high art.

All the crap batman also uses this to pretend like they are serious and not poseurs, but c'mon ben aflac and justice league crap, we know what's good and what's fraud

I've never read any of the Batman comics. Are these part of a series, or are they all standalone? Which one should I start with?

I have the leather bound hardcover version that I got for Xmas in 1989. Surprised I haven't lost it.
