That's too bad. I use them in all of my vacation rentals and have had zero issues. Each home has 4 nodes in it. I love the system and can control it remotely.

I've had the XT8 for a couple years. Firmware is key. It ranges from "didn't work someone kill me" to "works perfectly". The SNB forums has a good discussion. FYI my setup is hardwired. About 60 devices connected in total give or take. *288_23285 has been working perfect for me.

Had these for about a year. Worked fine but then eventually starting dropping connections. I tried updates/gnuton builds. Nothing seemed to help.
I don't have a typical network setup but not sure why performance degraded over time. Now they're unplugged and I'm using omada 670. I get less bandwidth but more control.

I have this in white and would highly recommend it. The dedicated wireless backhaul is great. I'm getting consistent 500 mbps everywhere in the house.

Just ordered a deco ax5700, how would this compare to that. I only have 300Mbps so don't need fast speeds but need around 4k sqft coverage and stability.

I hear you, I have the Deco XE75 and been lucky, so I'm questioning if it's due to having so many versions and the newer ones have finally been patched. At this point I can't afford to replace mine though, so I'm in for the long haul with Deco. 🤔

Asus literally does not QC their firmware releases so you typically get a fix or two and break 3 or 4 more things in order to get security updates. I have a super large footprint to cover AND rely upon the built-in network switch to connect to a another wired network router/switch with a NAS, whole-house audio, and Zwave controller among other things. The wireless side of the XT8 works flawlessly and you really do want to use the wireless backhaul if possible. It is the wired network that is a problem for me as the built-in switch just craps out at random times and requires the main node to be rebooted to reactive the built-in switch. I also had to stop using wired backhaul as there were too many random issues. I think it is something to do with the routing table and spanning tree protocol to prevent network loops. Both the XT8's and downstream router/switch have this turned off but it still happens. I've limped along with the XT8s for years and cannot wait for a deal on something else so I can unload these.
So yeah- I noticed that AiMesh with ethernet backhaul is not very great if you don't disable the wireless uplink. the nodes sometimes just decide to not use the ethernet and or go into settings update mode.

What I did was I put the 3 I have in 1x router + 2x ap mode, all wired. The management interface for Aimesh frankly sucks and offers almost no information regarding connected clients on nodes. No advanced wireless information etc. And if they lose power, they would take ages to get back up. Plus you don't get anything in mesh mode that AP mode doesn't do. The roaming features are still there.

With the merlin fork firmware its been very stable. AP mode helps in that I can use the 2nd 5Ghz and let it stretch its legs. The one typically used for backhaul is the 4x4 5G so I use that for the devices I use most. STBC (Space time block coding) and mu-mimo are available there too, so its a much better experience.

There are a few annoyances with things like IPS and security features requiring you to say yes to trend micro mining your data etc. The 2-packs seem to pair automatically out of the box, which is neat but can be annoying when you're trying to first configure them differently. Overall they do the job well, and the router capability seems to handle a 1Gbps connection well enough even for massive downloads etc. The 2.5G port seems out of place without lan ports or port aggregation... its the small things that feel out of place. But it was designed as a set it and forget it wireless mesh solution, so probably nitpicking here.

I have 5 nodes and an outdoor node, but I dislike the random outages and the app doesn't run well. There's almost always a node offline (not connected to the mesh).

I have these and love them. Be careful of firmware updates. If it aint broke dont fix it.

My only grip is that I used to be able to flawlessly use a external HD and connect via home network and stream pics/movies thru PCs and Home TVs A firmware update broke this for me.

You should be able to rollback and install an older firmware no? Or at least an older working custom firmware?

I think wireless APs tend to degrade because of heat and dust.

My google home worked for years before I had to move away from them. I moved off since google end of life'd them. I've had linksys wrt54G last for way longer than a year.

I've heard a lot of outage stories on older units, how old are your units?

So far I'm alright, but luckily I purchased these at Costco so returning them is easier.

Funny to see a WRT54G mentioned lol, I still have the 2 in my closet on DD-WRT from when they were the go to router, almost 15 years ago. 😅
