I got Pixel6a a year ago in a similar deal from Mint. Even though Mint claimed that phone is locked, I tried inserting a sim from an INTL carrier and it worked. When I called Mint after 12 months then they told me that Google phones are not locked so there is no need to unlock.
I am not sure about 7pro but mine 6a was unlocked from the day I received.

Ported my number to Google Voice many years ago, been using Mint most of those years as a "new customer" by getting a new number each time and setting GV to forward calls to the new number each time (a few quick taps in the GV app does it). This time I'll have to get my own number somewhere else to port in ($3 by setting up a new Google account & porting that out is my most likely path), but everything else is the same.

I look like a new account to Mint each time by using Gmail's "plus sign" feature whereby you insert some random text preceded by a plus sign right before the @ in your email address and that extra stuff looks like a different address to Mint, but Gmail ignores it. For example:

[email protected]

Looks unique to Mint, but still gets processed to the [email protected] address by Google. I often use the company and date for the random text to ensure it's unique, so I'd have:

[email protected]

Last year during the big Mint sale I got this phone and ported our numbers over. I'm a fan of the phone (no fingerprint issues) and Mint's pricing, but beware there are known MMS issues the Pixel 7 Pro on Mint that are not fixed after over a year.

Texting via group texts sometimes doesn't go through (or come through) and sending pictures via text just don't work. After troubleshooting for a year with support and reddit forums, there still isn't a fix. It got better after switching the APN and found one that works OK, but it's never consistent.

Just a warning to anyone considering the switch.

The big reason I'm still hesitating... I still have a Pxel 3, Before I sold my Pixel 7 Pro, I had to manually transfer photos and videos back to Pixel 3 to get backed up to Google Photos, which offers lifetime unlimited storage. It's a massive pain since they take a LONG time to transfer, and a PIA even if I can access a computer. And basically means no backup during travels. Really don't look forward to going back to that.
Tell me if this is crazy. Maybe it can work.
I get Pixel 7 with physical SIM. Activate it & new phone. Put the SIM in my Pixel 3 and keep using that. Use Pixel 7 only on special occasions when I need top camera gear.
I feel like Pixel 9 will be out in the wild for months though and I'll still be locked into this setup. Which would royally suck. Or maybe repeat this trick? Then I'll have 3 phones at once... ARGH
Just set up syncthing on both phones, and have your Pixel 7 Pro sync to the Pixel 3 and set the Pixel 3 to auto-delete backed-up photos. Then you won't have to think about manually moving photos from one device to another. Additionally, Google Photos will recognize when the photo is backed up on the Pixel 7 Pro and let you delete it safely too.

you lose the sim/service. But the phone itself will continue to work, and is still subject to being locked to Mint for 1 year. In essence, it's as if you paid $189 for a pixel 7 pro that's locked to Mint for 12 month.
Since I'm currently a Mint customer, could I just put my existing SIM into this new Pixel (and essentially throw away the new SIM/service plan)? If so, $189 for a brand new Pixel 7 Pro is still an outstanding deal.

Just for anyone wondering....I did the last 7 pro deal.

The phone works perfectly straightup on Mint. Put in your current sim and done. I sold my year of service. The service is NOT tied to anything. It doesn't have to be used on this phone. It doesn't have to be used by you. If it doesn't get used it just dies.

This deal is insanely good.

CalyxOS for a privacy phone.
Good suggestion there but if a SIM locked phone also means bootloader locked then you can't install another ROM. If someone who got this deal can confirm it's bootloader unlocked, I'm in.

Mont data speed sucks when compared to visible

For me
US Mobile > Visible > ATT Prepaid > Mint

Mint had atrocious ping times, that mean Google rerouting sucked so much
why is US mobile better than visible for you if i may ask?

have you ever try visible+?

It says free 6 months and then mint makes you purchase a 12 month data plan. So the data is separate from the plan? After the free 6 months are over do I need to purchase an extra 6 months of service for the phone to qualify to be unlocked?

If someone already has a Mint mobile line, are they still a "new customer"? Would think they would have worded it "new lines only" if someone already on Mint would be eligible for a second line with this deal.

What about a foreign sim card? I live outside the US and I'll be in the US for holidays ... Thinking of buying this, and then use it back in Europe ... I did a few years with LG G4 with the Verizon deal

A quick google search found some post in reddit said this Mint Mobile locked Pixel 7 Pro is ALSO bootloader locked.

People said usually if the Pixel 7 Pro phone is SIM locked, it is bootloader locked also.

Same with the recent pixel 6a deal. Once it is unlocked, then the bootloader will also be unlocked.
