As someone who owns this set, and many other compact sets, this 126pc Kobalt is probably the best abbreviated all-in-one on the market right now, and that includes all the 'filler' bits and bobs, which are actually pretty well-selected. If you're looking for a basic kit for the car, for emergencies, for general tasks, then you actually will end up needing these pieces.

I keep this under the passenger seat in my 23 yo minivan, and so it sees regular use (almost daily of late). The deep sockets have helped me pull the hub motor wheels off e-bikes and do a fair amount of machine alignment and light-medium duty shop work. The hex keys are fold-out so bundled together, they don't get easily misplaced, and frankly, you can't work on a modern car or any bicycle, without hex keys. The 3/8" ratchet has been smooth, modest, and reliable. It's given me more than enough torque when I needed it, and enough to accidentally break off a couple bolts.

I find those $20 stubby sets annoying - better than nothing in a pinch, but they seem to never have enough clearance to get easily at a fastener, or room to ratchet the handle back and forth -- on more than one occasion with such a kit, I've found it a challenge to do basic tasks such as replace a car battery or tighten a caster.

Bottom line, this is a slickdeal at $30 -- even without the 'filler' -- for the socket range alone, including the deep sockets, ratchet, and extensions, it's a slickdeal.
Over time, every crystal clear lid I've ever had has cracked or broken at a hinge or securing point... it's brittle by the nature of the material used.
TBH I almost feel like the $20 50 piece set is a better deal as it's all sockets and ratchets no bits/hex keys to push up the item count (51 pieces worth to be specific). https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-5...5014441973 This does have the advantage of being 3/8 based and going to much larger sizes though.

If I could justify spending $30 to rebuy these tools to have more junk in the house, this would be a handy set to have (in the house), with the nutsetters and hex bits actually being useful.

Given that it's Lowe's, they'd probably cancel my order like every other one since 2019.

Edit: On a tangent, has anyone had any of these crystal-clear plastic lids not crack and break at the slightest opportunity? I don't specifically own a "toolbox" with one of these lids, it's just been my experience my entire life with any hinged plastic container. I suppose it's possible that the toolbox lids are being made of a different flavor of plastic.

Just got this to give as a Christmas gift last week at $40. Looks nice, but not sure in quality since I've never used kobalt tools. I have a husky set already. On that note, does anyone know if Lowe's will refund the difference?

If they won't, you could always return it for a refund and rebuy it at the lower price.

picked up the $20 1/4 set earlier for white elephant gift exchange. yeah 3/8 more versatile but honestly all these sets with 50-100 pieces more than half of pieces ever see the light of day.

I was just about to mention the Dewalt tough boxes. Mine have been great. I've also had good luck so far with the Husky Pro storage containers (red ones with clear tops), even though they sound and feel really brittle.

This is also a great deal. I have this kit as well, and it has an actually good blow-molded case. Within its range, it's very capable, but if you only have one socket set, it should be the 3/8".

A 1/4" ratchet does not have the leverage for many common tasks - just one example from my own experience: I could not set the pre-drilled lag screws in my kitchen counter-top with this set. I had to step up to 3/8".

Surprisingly, I have had a smaller one of these sets for 5+ years and lid is intact. I think I've even stepped on it a few times while it was open (not closed). Not sure about this one, but wish I had bought another one at the time as it's been a very handy set.
