Tapo is the poor man's Kasa. TP Link came out recently and reaffirmed Kasa is their preferred North American brand with no plans to change that. That said Tapo and Kasa devices have atleast now a single app integration. It seems like TP link wants to eventually fork the two together, but I think theirs a quality gap still and api integration differences for smart actions

Thanks. Was going to ask why the two brands and what's the difference. Figured a reason like this but wasn't sure. I do have the 2k indoor camera and it's decent for the price. Not an amazing camera but mostly reliable. Def not the quality the product page depicts. I just they worked with HK.

I thought Tapo was their Matter compliant version of the old Kasas? Form factor looks identical in the pictures, and I'm not sure how Tapo could be the poor man's Kasa as the Tapo switches are generally more expensive. I have a house full of Kasa switches, but if I were just starting out, I'd probably go for their Tapo line given the Matter compliance, as long as the Tapos are of comparable quality to the Kasas.

The Kasa 3 packs of dimmers and on/offs seem to be priced at historical lows since Black Friday, a possible indication IMO that they are being phased out. .

Tapo app supports Kasa products, but not the other way around. Tapo also supports Homekit throughout the product line. Really feels like Tapo is the direction they're going.

I have several Tapo cams in HK. I use Scrypted in HomeBridge, there's detailed instructions out there. I have 4 of the Tapo matter switches that are ok, one of them likes to go offline every so often for a bit but other than that they're all fine

From what I read reading on reddit the other day...
Kasa = Being phased out, eventually, and supports a local API so they'll still work via local wi-fi connection if your internet is down.
Tapo = Their newer, slightly less feature rich (no energy monitoring in the outlet switches) line that's Matter compliant and slightly cheaper.

The 3x Kasa HomeKit switches are $40 on Amazon right now, lowest ever, making them just 67¢ more than the Tapo switches at Best Buy for $12.99 right now.

A lot of the Tapo items are on sale at Best Buy, still, for better prices than Amazon!

Just to clarify, Matter is also meant to be more universally compliant and feature offline capability.

If implemented correctly, it's the direction everyone is going to want to head for their smart home devices.

Things like energy monitoring are still up to the manufacturer, though, so it might be that TPLink is cheaping out by not including it. It's not a Matter restriction.

Tapo is a scam to sell you cheap hardware and hook you on a never ending service fee. Buy the Kasa line.

Just setup a 10 or so old Tp-link smart plug. Worked well and all good with Google home. Unlike the Dlink plug that is now worthless since they don't "support it". Total bs and will never buy another Dlink product ever.

This is the opposite from the truth. The whole point of matter is that it's an open standard.
