Also, for the inevitable comment that Onkyo models have issues with HDMI failures, this was a thing many years ago. In my case, they replaced the board for free, and I still consider myself a fairly loyal Onkyo customer. Anecdotal, as it is.
The S970H is definitely worth the extra $50. Just my subjective opinion, though they look very similar on paper (specifications).

Some people just want to have a bigger home system than just a soundbar.

I have the same NR656 and while only running 4k/60hz I've had no issues with Atmos delay (also on XSX for 4k UHD disk playback - also no issue on PS5 or Shield Pro).
I have had zero app issues with either of my Onkyo receivers. I've been pleasantly surprised with how well they work, especially after the app update a year or so ago. I mostly use mine to turn Zone 2 on or off because that function is ridiculously tedious with the remote. Maybe more complex stuff is glitchy.
That Zone 2 .. while good is a job in itself! Have to remember turn on/off separately. Who designs these things????
Yeah, I've unintentionally treated my neighbors to late night music before. I should probably revise my earlier thoughts on the app. The actual receiver controls app works nicely, but the built in content stuff (like Spotify) is pretty sketchy.
