This is a great game, no brainer at this price. Perfect present to keep in the basement for those gifts you forget about during the year

More about this game:

Take a hike in TRAILS, exploring iconic sites and national parks across the U.S., gathering resources, observing wildlife, and earning wilderness badges. TRAILS is a standalone adventure in the PARKS series with artwork from the Fifty-Nine Parks Print Series. In TRAILS, players hike back and forth along the trail, collecting rocks, acorns and leaves; taking pictures; and encountering wildlife to gain bonuses. At trailhead and trail end, you can turn in resources to earn badges, after which you start back in the other direction. As players visit the trail end, the sun sets over the trail. As night falls, trail sites grant more powerful actions, but they won't last forever. When the sun leaves the trail, the last round of play takes place, then the player with the most points from collected badges, photos taken, and bird sightings wins.

A fun, quick game that can play in 20 mins. Great for couples and families.
The compact box makes it easy to toss in a backpack to play at your favorite park or give it as a gift for any occasion.
A portion of every game sale is donated to the National Park Service by the publisher.

I don't personally know how it plays yet because I just ordered myself a copy today.

This is in the Parks game series. They have the Parks game on Boardgamearena : https://boardgamearena.com/gamepanel?game=parks
Trails is a lighter version of Parks.
I've played Parks on BGA but not Trails. Parks is very good.

I already have Parks and really enjoy it. Is it redundant to get Trails?

I think it's worth a grab. They're certainly similar games but they have different enough mechanics for it to be worth having both especially for just 12 bucks. Trails is a bit easier to learn and teach and a much smaller box so it can be a nice travel game.

Parks is amazing, but it's got its faults. The expansions Nightfall and Wildlife fixed most of those problems and I highly recommend getting all three.
Trails is a stand alone and it is terrific. It's a lot smaller with a quicker gameplay than Parks. If you already play Parks then you probably wouldn't ever play Trails.
Memories is also a standalone, but its for kids.

How hard would it be for kids to play?

Looks fun, and I love the art style the national parks adopted.

I've seen this at Ollie's last year. I wondered how it was that it was there.

The box says 10 and up and Board game geek community says 8 and up. I know its designed to play quicker and be a bit faster to learn than Parks.

Depending on the kid, you probably could play with one as young as 6. Each turn the player generally has only 3 options -- move 1 space 2 spaces, or canteen to trail head/end -- but the game rewards you for planning ahead. It's really good value for the price. The mechanics are simple and the artwork is nice.

It has not gotten to the table recently in my house, but it got plenty of play to justify the purchase, and it's easy for kids to digest.

Its a fairly simple set of game mechanics (collect resources, cards are worth X number of resources, you can move limited spaces, etc). Its an easier set of tasks than say a Life or Monopoly style game.

Most people on BGG said 8+, though a few marked 5yr/6yr old, so if you had a pretty smart child, they could figure it out at that age

Why did I half-read this as "a trailer park board game" sold by Walmart?

Kind of. I have both and Trails is a kind of a simpler/streamlined version of Parks. They're different games, but I don't think it's necessary to have both.
