Yeah...I'm 50 and had fun reading and watching the material included in this. Fantastic. But then you play the games and reality sets in and you remember how lame the games are compared to today. This collection is great but replay value is not there.

Stand on the mat in front of this room's door and you will be teleported into the classroom itself. There are several enjoyable games that age reasonably well imo.

Millipede, Food Fight (!!), Yars' Revenge, Warlords (arcade) with a group… I like even the 2600 version of Missile Command okay. Club Drive is worth a shot, esp if you have a second player.

Tempest 2000 for Jag is by the Yak iirc (Jeff Minter). That's worth your time.

At $50, steep. At $28 still a lot of cash for the gameplay. I'll wait a little longer, but it'll be fun when it's cheaper.

Wonder why no Space Invaders. What was that, Taito? Who owns the rights now? The 2600 version is quite good imo; that's too bad.

It's perfect when explaining sports to kids. Asteroids hasn't been improved. Breakout, centipede. I find tennis to be repeatable. That's about it. Have to try volleyball.

What it does demonstrate is that games these days have complex graphics and design. Mechanics are fundamentally the same with direction + button.

all respects and love to Atari... all respects due... and this collection is awesome, and has a context they put around the games for you to understand them a bit better and make them a tad bit enjoyable...

ofcorse many of the best Atari games from that era cant be on here, like Mario Bros, Pac Man, DonkeyKong, so this is dealing with the best of the rest. Yars Revenge and Missle Command... Still cool titles to revist sometimes!

That being said, the real fun and the real stuff that holds up starts at NES and Master System/Genesis ...that stuff has plenty of legit , fun games that age great

I owned an Atari TT030 Graphics Workstation at one time. Back in 1988 - a few years after I quit being a Navy Airborne Electronic Warfare Officer - I predicted that within 30 years video games would look real enough that there would be difficulty telling them from reality. Seems I was pretty close.

These, and all the rest listed, are on my Retropi.

Anyone old enough to play those who also has some configuration skills and ability to follow technical directions and watch YouTube may be advised to look into building retrogaming Pi's, or if you really want everything, an AtGames console with Awesome saUCE. You can have every Atari PC / console / arcade flavor, ColecoVision, Intellivision, Commodore 64/Amiga, Odyssey, TI-994a, NeoGeo, all this stuff through emulation. Then you can peck at the ten or twenty games you thought you liked for ten or twenty minutes, decide whether they held up or not, and go on to the next one.

This is more of a history lesson about the early days of gaming; videos, interviews, and historical documents are available before and after you play these games in chronological order.

To put the collection in perspective vs a game like "Batman Arkham Knight", consider this analgous to a Criterion documentary about Fellini vs. watching a John Wick movie; very, very, very different experiences.
didnt know that, thanks

Some of the Activision games were my favorite to play on Atari including Pitfall, SeaQuest, Keystone Kapers, Barnstorming etc. For these I like https://www.amazon.com/Activision-Flashback-Blast-Electronic-Games/dp/B07FJXQZBW/ref=sr_1_4?keywords... [amazon.com]

For the old games like Asteroids, Centipede, Combat, etc. this collection will do alright. But sometimes I even forget how basic the graphics were. Even on the big name games like Pac-Man and Q-bert. (Our home systems like the Atari 2600) barely resemble the arcade versions.

Activision was the original Atari team. The software developers were smart with their math, said screw it to the greedy corporation of Atari then who took most of the profits and gave them peanuts, walked out and formed activision. The atari now is a former glory of itself. Activision is what atari may have been.

True;

I do think it's touched upon on the Atari collection (which I treated more as a documentary than anything else.)

Anyway, if you want to play River Raid, here: https://archive.org/details/atari..._ax-020-04
