3 external monitors hooked up to a laptop is hardly a 'popular choice', lol

I get it. People pay $2k not just for the hardware, but the entire eco-system (iOS MacOS operating system on M3 pro chip + 36g ram + 512g ssd + 120hz refresh rate screen + superior audio == high quality environment for entertainment / video editing/software development and much more) I think you are still thinking in a PC mindset that I pay much less money for this type of hardware so I can install whatever I want to (a highly customizable gaming PC or DIY linux development environment).

Customization is the main feature of PC which is consequently cost-friendly. Mac users are different group. People may not very much into gaming but love web browsing/video streaming, or not highly technical but want user-friendly OS for work or highly technical but annoyed by troubleshooting like driver update in Linux. These are people like to pay more money to save their time to get what they want to do without the hassle of configuration which is most part of the fun of building a PC

Also there are people like me do Xcode for living to use a Mac to make ends meet.

Easy answer: we don't justify it.

Definitely one of the worst parts of the Mac experience. There are good and bad part about buying a Mac.

An Apple Macbook buyer could just as easily ask you how you can possibly "justify" using objectively worse Intel laptop chips that are slower than an M3 while consuming twice the power. Here's a 20-watt M3 stomping a 55W Intel chip. AMD fares a little better than Intel but not much.

Truth is, there are always tradeoffs. I've been using Macs as my primary for a while because I'm relatively happy with the tradeoffs... not because I think they're perfect.

Don't assume others are brainwashed. You probably own a Dell or Asus or something and I wouldn't assume you're some brainwashed cult member who thinks Dell or Asus can do no wrong. I'm sure you weighed the pros and cons and made the best choice for you.

PS: Now that Macbook Pros have brought back the SD card slot, it's pretty easy to just leave a low-profile 1TB MicroSD card adapter in that slot for extra storage. This is obviously not ideal, but it's.... fine.

At $2K, everything seems ok, except the 512GB SSD should really be 1TB!

It's not "iOS operating system on M3" but nice try.
err my bad I am iOS developer so mention iOS like 1000 times on daily basis instead of MacOS

That maybe this made sense 5 years ago, but in the current day, the inability to support a popular choice for a premium priced computer is...well, classic Apple differentation of products to make you pay $500 more
what the hell are you talking about? hardly anyone had that kind of set up

Apple users - please tell me how you justify the small storage included in "base" model $2000+dollar laptops. 512GB NVME is like 30 bucks now, you can easily get 2TB for under $100.

Apple is gonna charge like an extra $700 to go from 512GB to 1TB, and another $5000 to go up to 2TB. GTFOH apple.

I understand 8GB of RAM on Mac isnt as bad as 8GB on PC - so wont pick on that, but this is just absurd. Storage is storage.

If you are a creator, do you just carry around an external SSD for everything?

I dont get it.
Protip: You can be critical of Apple's SSD & RAM upgrade prices without spreading false/ignorant BS.

I don't love the upgrade pricing myself, but there are significant benefits that Apple Silicon's SoC approach to RAM/SSD offers over conventional PC builds - particularly in speed & efficiency, which these laptops are very well known for.

I'm going to disagree with you on that one. The large majority of Apple computers sold are laptops and people definitely want to be able to expand their functionality into desktop style experiences.

Disagree all you want, but 3 external displays with a laptop (or even desktop) is about farthest you can get from 'popular' setups without going to 4 or more. Most people don't even use two.

Note that I'm not saying NO ONE wants the ability to have 3 external displays, just that it's so uncommon that it's hard to justify. Additionally, with such large format displays available today, two ultrawides can literally replace 4x conventional monitors.

Wow wish I didn't get the 1750 deal from Best Buy yesterday… instant regret
So $250 for another 18G RAM. I'm in the same boat except I don't really need it. I just want to be able to open 20 pages of browser and not worry about cache to the SSD.

eh... I paid $2900 total for a 14" M3 Max 14cpu/30gpu

after tax, this thing is $2200. be mindful of the tax rate depending where you buy form. Also good luck rending this back to Adorama if there is something wrong with it.

You get that at BHPhoto w/ no tax? 36GB RAM, right? Does that feel light compared to what the rest of the machine is capable of? (Shopping around myself)

Will there ever be a PC laptop or track pad that supports 3 finger drag? I use a Mac and PC for work. I use the Apple track pad on my PC using some custom drivers from Github

well I got Best Buy to price match the Microcenter deal of $2880 which is $320 off. Then I paid 6% tax by shipping it. I got 5% back on credit card for the purchase and I also get free AppleCare due to having total Tech with Best Buy. So after the discounts my total with tax was $2900 + included apple care+. I also Have BH card with no tax and would have jumped on those deals but BB gives me apple care. I think this is decent future proofing. Lightroom will try to use 20gb ram and OS will use 10gb. I never see swaps on it and Resident Evil 4 runs smooth on max settings and smooth connected to 5k Studio Display with resolution set at 5k settings maxed out. The fans will blow full power if you do that but game runs smooth. For regular stuff you are fine with the 18gb version for $1750 but I wanted to throw anything at this thing with confidence. Editing graded 6k h.265 is super smooth. Also encodes videos faster than I need it to.

It really depends on what you're doing.

It's kind of like asking if 2,000lbs of towing capacity on a vehicle is enough. I don't know, do you need to tow things there are more than 2,000lbs? Do you currently own and use a computer? How much RAM does it have? Is it enough?

In all seriousness, if you want a TL;DR -- 36GB is going to be more than enough for most people for any kind of forseeable future. The base configs on Macs are generally 8 or 16GB so software is going to be written with that in mind.

You can benefit from more RAM if you're working with big-ass files for content creation, data science, etc. But if you fall into those categories hopefully you already have some idea what you need.
