Because H&R Block and Intuit work very hard to make sure the government isn't allowed to do so.

Yup! One word: lobbying.

Gotta love our corrupt system, causing people to spend millions of extra dollars and God knows how many man-hours filing tax returns that really have no reason to exist in this day and age.

what does it mean by:

1 State via download. State e-file sold separately

what are you buying if not the ability to file it?

also does this come with a download code (emailed or wait for physical box?) or do you need a cd drive to use it?
It will fill out the state forms for one state for you and you can download, print, and mail them. Or, you can pay extra to e-file state. If you need to fill out a form for a second state, you'll also need to pay extra

Freetaxusa.com is solid. It has free federal returns and $15 state returns.

Does this site allow import download from the major brokerages like turbo tax does? Can I import my tax documents from those sites for stocks etc? Or is this a simple web based tax website. I like turbo tax, because it's so easy with the prompts and questions. It also has a knowledge base that's pretty intuitive and you're able to import previous year returns as well.

Can someone comment on how easy it is to share with family? Supposedly you need to login to your account to activate? Can you simply share credentials also with family?
For the physical copy it's pretty easy. The software can be installed on multiple computers using the same activation code, there's a limit but I don't recall what it is, maybe 5. I recommend you DO NOT register or whatever the product asks you to do, just skip that step when you launch the software, click Continue and confirm that you do not want to register. Not sure if this impacts anything, but I never do it, and I tell those I share with to not to. I've never needed to create or sign into any account like you've stated in your comment. You can sign into certain external accounts so Intuit can retrieve tax/other data to make filing easier though.

Most computers don't come with disk drives nowadays, so you'll need to have access to one. You can copy all the files in the disk and put it in a folder within a USB flash drive, it's the easiest way to share. You can even compress (.zip/.rar/.7z) the folder and share it via file cloud sharing if needed.

Just remember that the activation code gets you 5 federal e-files. You only get 1 state download, I'm not sure if this is per installation since those I share with live in the same state. You have to pay extra to do a state e-file, which I do not do. Cheaper to just print and send it in myself, but that's your call.

Bought the Premier version. Intuit now requires creation of an account with them. When I did so, got an offer for 1 year of Quicken Classic Starter for free.

Thanks for all the answers, fellow slickdealers! I have purchased the digital version instead. Between the tax on physical version and no rush credit I had it was about $10 cheaper to go that route.
How did you get rid of tax on the digital version? Since the $10 gift card is being physically shipped, you can't just change your address to a tax free state.

For the 2023 version, You CANNOT use the software without registering it. This is a new feature that Turbotax added on this year, specifically so you can't share the software with other people.

Deluxe can handle 1099s. You don't need Premier for that and Premier doesn't do much more in terms of help to file a 1099.

You won't need Premier, you'll be able to do everything that you need with the Deluxe version and it handles multiple returns. Deluxe has support for investment accounts. It's a confusing thing, but I've been using Deluxe for several years now and have not needed the upsell version of Premier.

You get one state software free to file your state return. You have to pay a filing fee, which I've always hated, if you want to file electronically. You can print and file your state return via the mail as an option and not pay the electronic filing fee. If I remember right, it was about $20-$25 to file the state electronically.
I started with deluxe last year but at some point (can't remember now) it wouldn't go any further. I had to upgrade to Premier version and pay the full amount since by the time I finished the software it was the last day to file.

Here is a link to amazon that gets the download of gift card and download of TT Deluxe software with federal and state for $44.99 with $10 amazon gift card.

https://a.co/d/2CNlFrq

If link does not come up perfect click on box that says "Download gift card bundle"

interesting part is it says returnable til Jan 31 2024 but usually Amazon download software not returnable.

I see a few comments here saying deluxe is good enough for investments. If that's true, what exactly is the difference from premier?

They actually tried to do it that way (a free tax software from the IRS), but Inuit and H&R Block paid millions to get Congress to stop the development of it.

It's coming from the IRS if congress isnt paid off again to prevent it.

"n 2024, some taxpayers will have for the first time a new filing option that many advocates have been demanding for years: a free tax preparation software program, like TurboTax or its competitors, created by the IRS.

For its first filing season, the program, Direct File, will be available in only 13 states and won't be suitable for all taxpayers, the IRS announced on Tuesday. If you want to be one of the first to try it out, you'll need a special invitation.

Selected taxpayers will get invitations around mid-February, an IRS official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the program before Tuesday's announcement."

I noticed the disc version, they charge sales tax, however, for the download version, there's no sales tax added.
