I was gifted a sharpening stone/block and that has worked for me. Time to upgrade to this?

I have an older version of this same sharpening block. I don't have any expensive knives to use it on, but it works wonders on the cheap knives we do have. This thing absolutely gets them sharp enough to shave the hairs on the back of my hand.

Not if you're good with the stone, as this isn't an upgrade. Loading on these ceramic rods will impact performance without an easy way to restore or maintain. Plus you can't adjust the angle, so if it doesn't match the edge grind of your knives then it will take an eternity to reprofile.

My preference is freehand, but there are other system designs that make consistent angles easier. You're looking more towards things like kme, edge pro, wicked edge, or powered systems like work sharp or tormek to increase speed and consistency while offering flexibility.
