To anyone considering this who also values their privacy, I'd highly recommend reading through a bit of this thread on their forums:

I've had Plex Pass for almost 10 years and while it's got a great UI, I can't root enough for competitors like Emby or Jellyfin more and I've only felt more disgruntled with Plex as time goes on.

What other paid service have you seen where there is literally no direct customer support avenue short of, "post it in the forums and hope Plex employees see it to fix it." I'm not kidding. That's how they MAYBE fix issues with the platform. I get that supporting so many streaming platforms takes a lot of effort, but then STOP PUSHING BROKEN NEW FEATURES AND FIX THE EXISTING ONES!

I have issues with local live TV streaming/recording, using Plex Pass with friends, Bluetooth audio sync issues when using the latest Apple TV 4Ks, Plex Downloads for offline watching has virtually never worked, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Sorry about the long rant but I just feel that people considering should be aware at this point, and diving in with a few of the other competitors when starting up might be the right move. Thanks for coming to my ranty TED talk.
I like the functionality I thought it was worth it when I bought it a few years ago. I appreciate the work they do, I'm more concerned they're going to stop working if they don't make enough

Plex should just permanently drop the price at this point, the amount of users they could gain from this type of discount structure is miniscule.

If they can bring it down to $50 I'll bite. After all, I got into Plex/media servers to save money IE no longer having to pay cable and steaming services. $90 is just a bit too much for a cheap basterd that enjoys sailing the high seas, pinching the doubloons and swabbing the wallets. Arrgh, there be no commercials in those mkvs! laugh out loud

Seriously though, this is especially true as Plex free works just fine for most people via Direct Play; transcoding is really not necessary on most modern clients.

$50 would be a fair price IMO; I wouldn't feel cheated and I would be supporting the Plex Developers; win win?

This is one of the primary reasons I don't have Plex yet. I've downloaded the free version of the app to check it out but nothing has really propelled me to want it.
The reason I am not sold on Plex is because I can already have things my way without needing the service and yet another company siphoning my data.

What's preventing people like me from buying at $90 is that there are free alternatives like Jellyfin [jellyfin.org] and Kodi [kodi.tv](Just share your media files via SMB or FTP). And the fact that the free version of Plex works fine for most people. (Most modern client devices support Direct Play ergo making transcoding superfluous)

It's a hard sell at $90 considering their tech savvy and cheap basterd buccaneer audience/user base. $50 would be more palatable and less outrageous considering the points that I've made previously IMO...

Wow, surprised at the hate for Plex in this thread. For me, it just works and has been for some time. I still think Plex is smoother than Jellyfin. I think it comes down to how "hardcore" you are about self-hosting. Still, unless you're using hardware transcoding often, you don't need a PlexPass anyway for the most part.

I agree with you but recently it's been annoying. Like seeing advertised stuff as default for both myself and family (stuff not on my plex), downloads being a complete hit or miss, the default opt-in emails of what I was watching, etc. If there was an option to leave it 100% as it used to be before they started to try to commercialize, it would have been great. Instead of fixing stuff that broke along the way, they focus on adding new things no one asked for.

The best thing I can say about Plex is that it just works well most of the time with very little configuration. I especially enjoy being able to resume video files at the exact same spot on multiple devices. (IE watch 25% of movie in my living room, stop it and resume it in my garage.)

However, I had a major issue where my Plex server would just freez/become unresponsive. PmsService [github.com] has mitigated this problem greatly though (It will restart Plex automatically when it detects a crash/freeze) I still get a freeze about once a month however.

Another problem I've been having is that music will play twice from a playlist. (One track will play over an already playing track thus overlapping) I've been hoping for a fix for months now. I'm not the only one having this problem [reddit.com] it seems as well.

Overall, the more I think about it I agree with you that Plex is starting to become too invasive and problematic. I'll probably go back to using Kodi with the Jellyfin plug in eventually. I've always had a soft spot/affinity for Kodi since their XBMC days...

Hard to beat Kodi for my purposes. I use Fire Sticks and Kodi has all the features I need to handle it.

This just makes me sad. $90 for a LIFETIME membership makes you feel "cheated"?

I bought my lifetime pass in 2017. I use Plex literally every day.

So even I'd paid retail price, I'd be down to less than five cents a day for the service.

I can't think of anything else in my house that cost the same and gets used literally every day.
