I bought a set of 1\2 inch drive, deep 12pt impact sockets, ~5 years ago, and they have held up great! I use them often, with my Milwaukee 1400 ft.lb. impact, and haven't broken one yet. I bought the set for $20. Crazy good price.
Harbor freight quality has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years.

Buy tools very carefully. Many are very poor quality. Bought a digital level and it was not even close to being accurate. Bought a set of socket extension bars that snapped with the least bit of pressure. Bought the set of titanium drill bits and all the small bits snapped when pressure was applied.
Why were you using regular extension bars on your impact?

Harbor freight tools are good entry for home use. Yes they are not to the same quality standard as other manufacturers. But they have held up fine for hobby use in my home garage.

I love it for one-off tools that I may use once or twice a year. If it breaks, then I know I use it enough to justify buying higher quality like BluePoint.

Don't buy these if your income depends on the tool functioning. Do buy these if you need to fill out a tool chest for home use. Perfect to get started and figure out what you really use most often.

As far as the older SKU's and cheaper stuff they carry, it's definitely not a bad idea to inspect things in store (if packaging allows) and pick the best one off the shelf. Test it out at home within the return period and make sure it's not defective/DOA.

But I somewhat look at it as 2 Harbor Freights within one store these days, there's the old Pittsburgh, Warrior, Chicago Electric HF, and the newer Quinn, Doyle, Icon, Hercules HF. For the most part they've evolved into a "good, better, best" product marketing strategy, and those "better" (Quinn, Doyle) and "best" (Icon) brands are pretty good or even comparable to higher-priced name-brand tools in some cases. Example, the new Quinn sealed head ratchets are highly likely rebranded Gearwrench, there are multiple Youtube teardowns comparing the two and the internals are interchangeable. With standard 20% coupon, those Quinn ratchets are ~40% the price of the identical Gearwrench.

You also have to give HF credit for their warranty process, they've stepped into the former Sears Craftsman "no hassle, grab a new one off the shelf and go" role better than anyone else, and from reading a lot of online comments they seem to offer that more consistently on a national basis than Lowe's or HD, where you might get the hassle free treatment or you might get a blank stare from a 19 y/o associate and a 30 minute ordeal to get manager approval for a replacement tool.

I'm not a member of the ITC, but I was emailed a 25% off coupon a week or so ago and I used it on an Quinn torque wrench a few days ago. Might grab a breaker bar with this new coupon.

Looking at that extendable breaker bar.

That might be your experience, my experience has been positive with everything I've ever bought there. I broke a screwdriver I used as a chisel but that's the only tool that's ever broken from there.
I'm still waiting for other stuff to break so I can justify replacing it with something better quality but it hasn't happened yet.

I've used HF roto head ratchets and chrome vanadium impact sockets for decades without failure. Dip the roto head in ATF for lubrication. The 1/2" roto head ratchet is preloaded to 350 ft-lb each year to avoid problem during use. The 3/4" breaker bar is also a beast. No need to spend more $ when you have access to HF's excellent replacement policy. Stick with Made in Taiwan tools if possible.

I agree with everything except the warranty process. I've had multiple recent experiences where "No receipt, no exchange" was the store's mantra. I've broken a number of old Pittsburgh breaker bars and HF refused to honor the warranty because I didn't have the receipt, and I had purchased them before they were compelling people to provide phone numbers (so they can look at your purchase history in the computer). I went so much as to show them that they're selling the same breaker bar on the shelf to this very day. No budge.

Doesn't apply to discounted/sale items. Dumb question but does that include clearance?
Just hoped it would.

THIS

I often say the exact same thing about HF tools.

Get the most expensive item you can find, get 25 percent off. Return for in-store credit without receipt. Profit on other shit you actually need to
This is the can-do attitude SD was built on! Otherwise, it's just a 'deal' until you make it 'slick'

Just a heads up. The coupon I got in my email did not have a barcode on it so they had to override the purchase this morning (kinda pain). They are in the process of fixing this. Yes, ITC member here.
