I'm a dentist. It's my first line recommendation for bruxism. Not necessarily these, but any $30 Walgreens option so long as the patient will actually wear it. If it works, that's great. I've never met a single dentist that hates these, and I've met a lot more than you. It would be great if you didn't disparage an entire profession of people that really care and dedicate the majority of their lives to it. Pretty scummy.

What dentists hate are patients that don't treat their bruxism, develop the need for full mouth restoration, and then complain that they need a lot of dentistry while wanting some magical low-cost repair. Wear the nightguard and pay a fair price for another dentist, and they won't care about which nightguard you use if the attrition stops.
What you are demonstrating is sampling bias based on limited anecdotal experience. A lot of sources would hold that the typical minimum sample size would be about 1500 to able to extrapolate to the US population, but I get you can't do that at the individual level.

The trouble with trying to tell anything from your statement is we don't know if you encountered three bad dentists (which I would believe would be highly unlikely unless you are a cheapskate going to a corporate practice like Aspen for "free exams") or if you could be correctly diagnosed by three dentists and still incapable of understanding why. We just can't tell. You likely don't even know if you have posterior or canine guidance, but you believe you are armed with the information to state emphatically that those three other people are wrong and/or unethical.

You missed the point that these, and similar bruxism devices, are typically in the $20-30 range at Walgreens. These can be good, some boil and bites can work, and custom occlusal guards can too. The number one factor is compliance - it has to actually be worn.
It's really not the place for a mega discussion on bruxism, but I'll just give you a few facts and then you can go read. Also, realize that day and night bruxism differ as one is behavioral while one is unconscious:

1.) Prevalence of bruxism is far and away highest in children and is generally self limiting.

2.) If you have significant wear from bruxism, you also have a problem with acid.

3.) People with bruxism are far more likely to also have sleep apnea.

4.) A large neck is associated with bruxism.

I heard that off the shelf mouth guards lead to teeth displacement whereas custom made mouth guards don't. Is that correct? I'm using one of those 30$ mouth pieces off Amazon and my teeth hurt in the morning (my bruxism is crazy bad I guess)

It's funny that the US is the only place (in my experience) where dentists recommend these guards to the point where "hey man, I have a cavity, it's painful, can u help?". "No, can't see anything, buy night guards". Lol. I've been visiting dentists in Australia, New Zealand and the whole bunch of Asian countries. Also worked in dentistry (equipment, not a doctor) in Russia and have had a meriad of consultations in different top-range dental clinics (some with top range KaVo stuff, not a no name Chinese crap I've seen in a big clinic in the middle of San Francisco). And I knew noone wearing night guards. We came to the US 2 years ago, and at least 4 different doctors explained all problems with "you need to wear a night guard" to both me and my partner.

I don't trust these doctors, as I feel like their solemn purpose is to sell me stuff I don't even need. But will definitely try this just for the sake of experiment. Thanks OP

My personal review of this product: I don't recommend them. I noticed after a short period of wearing them nightly that my bite was separating at the exact location of the plastic portion of the product designed to keep your teeth apart. In other words, my bite changed. If you insist on buying these over investing in a molded night guard fit to your mouth, be careful and monitor for changes in your bite. I stopped using the product and my bite returned to normal. I ended up investing in a molded guard and have been happier.

There is truth to that. A couple grams of force for 8 hours a day will generate sufficient orthodontic force to move teeth. Will the amount of orthodontic movement be noticeable? That's a much more difficult question.

If you need a retainer after undergoing orthodontics, you definitely want custom retention. If you have abrasive crowns in your mouth, you should probably consider a custom guard.

One of the purposes of custom guards is to separate the teeth enough to attempt to deactivate the masseter from clenching. A dentist will often utilize a leaf gauge to make sure the appliance is adequately thick for this. Unfortunately, that necessarily means a bulkier appliance. You tried the cheap therapy. Maybe try another. If that doesn't work, maybe try a custom. I'd try a sleep study or some stress reduction techniques to look for potential exacerbations.

My dentist recommended these and I just couldn't get used to them. Hard to keep your mouth fully closed with them inserted. I don't have a thick neck or sleep apnea that I know of (asked for a sleep study from PCP and never got it) so not sure where the clenching at night comes from, probably stress.

I recently got these, & I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've tried them on the upper & the lower, & they don't stay in place; on the two rare occasions I thought they may stay, I awoke w\sore gums in the back.

I used to use these then amazon went nuts on the price. Happy to see them lower now but I couldnt justify over a dollar a day (a few months ago) for something I have to throw away daily that isn't my vision. (Did any one try to use them more than a day?) Anyway, my current is:

https://www.amazon.com/DenTek-Comfort-Fit-Protection-Nightime-Grinding/dp/B002WTCK4Q/ref=sr_1_7?crid... [amazon.com]

These are a tad thicker but overall feel is VERY similar. It is thicker where you usually grind so it does last quite awhile and at a fraction of the price 22 for 2 months pretty much. Would tell you to give anyone to give it a try if plackers go up in price. Ive had a dentist mouthguard but it kept falling out and was super thick all the way around. I am sure they are better for you but I kept waking up with them under me and i had to clean them and netted little time with them on while sleep was probably minimal. Sometimes you have to make a call for your self. These light weight stay in for me all night, granted prolly a higher risk of choking on them lol...lets not think about that..., and I like the light feel.

I do feel a difference in the morning, I guess I do grind a lot when i sleep.

also yeah yeah go back to the dentist to get it resized...I did twice and gave up. My be incompetent dentist but they sure didnt care after I got the guard and told me to blindly keep using it, and it is just how it is....

Went to the dentist like 2 weeks ago. Was told my teeth show grinding maybe in my sleep. Pushed me to buy the version of this for 700$ about 300 with insurance. Asked if I could use a mouth guard or something like this. Was told they used to recommend them, but have found they make patients bite harder in their sleep due to the type of plastic and not perfectly fitted to their mouth. Many of their patients developed jaw problems so they do not advise patients to use anymore. I have no idea what's true or not...I work in the medical field and sadly I have met so many doctors that give unnecessary procedures for financial gain I take their advice with a grain of salt. Will give this a try though, thanks.

My personal experience: In the past, I used to grinded my teeth so badly so my denstist recommended a mouth guard customed one. It costed alot so I bought mouth guard on amzn for 1/15 of the cost (the one you molding yourself). After a year, my teeth was shifting like crazy,in a bad way, making a gap in between teeth. I really don't know what caused it. Reading the reviews, it seems that other people having same problems. Since, I stop using it.

Trying these. I had a tongue ulcer a couple years ago, from clenching my teeth on my tongue. I cured it with a $20 mouth guard that you mold in hot water. My dentist and ENT both approved of me going that route. I still get some tongue irritation, and don't use the mouth guard any more, because it is annoying. These are cheap enough to give a try. I do use CPAP now, but this shouldn't interfere.

How to you fix it? I ask my dentist and he said that it'll get better with time

I tried these and it was hard for me to use, I felt like I was going to choke and couldn't even fall asleep one night I with them. My dentist made custom night guard and its been awesome - granted it was $600+ (of which I paid $100 after insurance). This is a ridiculous price and there are cheaper options online where you can do your own molds at home and get custom ones for a fraction of the price. That being said, grinding teeth caused my fillings to crack and made me need to have more frequent dental work which in the long run cost even more. So my suggestion is if you ground your teeth definitely try something like this. If not something a little bit more expensive from a drugstore, but ideally you can invest a bit in custom night guards either online or via a dentist
