It is worth to carry even a cheap spare rear derailleur if you are doing a long trip, nothing is worse as to have a broken bike 40 miles away from home/car. Master link is a default item to have with a tube. If you ride in a city park don't need to carry anything

Is is worth it to carry a spare master link/chain tools? Has anyone ever broken a chain?

I made the mistake of jumping up into a 11 chain. Haven't broken one yet but they are a pity to install and cost so much. I just replace every 0.5.

Almost went 12 but wasn't in the budget. I would have just wasted money my riding habits.

Yes, chain breaks are rare but could happen to anyone. I only broken on once over many years (pretty new 10speed XT/Ultegra), but i have helped at least a dozen people on the trail.

I would personally not buy a multitool or assemble a road/trail side bike tool kit without a chain breaker

I worked on this and can attest, the pump is useless.

This POS pump is in here because retailers only focus on item count and what they think are features.

All the complaints about the pump and no mention that the 21-piece count is a joke. They seem to be counting the individual connectors on the ONE wrench as multiple items.

Please don't buy emergency kits of any kind from Bell. They're all scam garbage!

https://a.co/d/9OZKluf

I bought this Bell emergency roadside kit from them 12 years ago and returned it. They had the temerity to use a bag without a zipper that required zip-ties to close and then put 25 zip-ties in the kit and then counted each individual zip-tie to close the damned bag again towards the 100-count.

It's 12 years later and Bell STILL makes the crappiest emergency kits possible. You could make better ones at the dollar store. Please don't give them any more money. They should be out of business for selling pure less-than dollar store crap as emergency kits for this long.

I've carried a spare master link and chain tool for years and thousands of miles. I haven't needed them yet, and I've never broken a chain. Now that I've said this, you know what will happen.

I will continue to carry the master link and chain tool and hope I don't fall off my bike and smash my head on something when I eventually do break a chain.

Can I ask you a question about bikes? I just undusted my 29er Mountain Bike after several years. I noticed a thin piece of rubber coming out of the wheel and proceed to pull it out like a ribbon. It was cracked and in multiple pieces. I thought well of course I need a new tube. I then take the entire wheel off the rim and the actual tube is in there and in good shape but I don't have right pump attachment to double check. So what was that ribbon piece and what would you recommend I replace it with?

I have a similar pump, it has a rubber insert behind the screwed on cap nut, that way it fits two different valve types. You may have to turn it.

I have a Park PMP-3.2 pump that works well with presta cores. I needed something that worked with removable cores.

Could it have been the rim liner that protects the tube from where the spokes come through the rim? Or if the bike is that old was it the bead of your actual tire?
