Stay away from HP and their bad DRMing of every function of the device. I have one I bought from costco less than a year ago and only printed a handful of black and white stuff and shows 50% ink but I never signed up for their ink service so whenever I print now most black doesnt show up and everything else looks faded. They also will not let you use other printer functions such as the scanner if you dont have ink.

Laser printers use a light (laser) to electrostatically fuse a fine pigmented powder (toner) to the paper at time of printing. So no, toner does not dry out if unused for extended periods.

I just returned this one after using it for a week. The print quality is pretty mediocre. 4x6 image prints are downright awful ... washed out and faded on glossy photo paper.

Toner can go bad if improperly stored though, and is susceptible to aging at a much reduced level. Just to be fair.

Anyone know what the refill costs on this look like? Are there satisfactory 3rd party inks?

ETA: I'm weighing going back to inkjet as color lasers seem to be quite expensive lately. Brothers' new models all seem to have a new chipped toner cartridge for which there aren't yet widely available 3rd party replacements... making the investment rather daunting. A refillable tank jet could be interesting, though.

The bad reviews are overwhelmingly for setup issues, probably user error. My setup was a piece of cake.

Just a head's up, but only 1 year of ink compared to 2 years on the /Costco/Sam's Club model.
