Warehouse price will be cheaper. Costco front loads shipping.
When I was into high performance cars, I read a lot at BobIsTheOilGuy. There are folks there who are actual scientists, industry insiders, and many with way more oil knowledge than I even want to retain. After geeking out way too much, my conclusion is that the brand of oil doesn't make much difference in most cases, as long as it meets or exceeds the manufacturer's specs. The most important thing is to change it on time-ish, which so many people never do.

Oil quality varied a lot in our parents' or grandparents' heydays but it doesn't seem to be a concern anymore, so I wouldn't avoid Costco, Amazon Basics, or even WM Supertec oils, although I've always been partial to Castrol which probably makes no sense.

If you're unsure or just curious or a big nerd, or want to verify that your engine is doing okay, it doesn't cost much to send a used sample out for analysis. Blackstone Labs, for one, will send you a whole report.
Cliffsnotes for those following:

Mobil 1 5w-20 current prices:

Costco: $5.58 per quart in 6 pack= $33.49
Walmart: $5.59 per quart in 5 quart jug= $27.97
Walmart: $4.91 per quart in 12 quart bag in a box= $59.00
Amazon: $same as Costco (click $10 coupon)

Better deals can probably be had on Pennzoil, Castrol, Quaker State, Valvoline, and as always- Supertech. I'm sure someone will bring up the scientific merits of each and probably the always infallible gospel of project farm. Now back to your regularly scheduled Costco thread.

If you normally buy 1 gallon jugs. This would be $22.32 before tax. Debating on if it's worth it or to hold out for a better deal

For the 5w30 at least, cost per quart is cheaper here. Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-30, 12 Quart (Bag in Box) https://www.walmart.com/ip/383945284

He is comparing a gallon jug which I have never seen in Mobil 1 before. Walmart is cheaper. 5qt for $28. Most cars don't use 6qts so no reason to waste $ and space storing it.

4/6 * 33 = 22

But the real trick is he's talking about a gallon jug of Mobil 1 motor oil, which has yet to be invented.

A 5qt (these do exist) jug would cost $27.91, in case one wants to consider how good a price that would be.

Many cars do consume some oil (every Chrysler produced anywhere, ever), and with longer oil change intervals (10-15k miles) the norm it's not unusual to have to add a quart or two before the next oil change.

Local Menard's has Valvoline Advanced Full Synth for $27.99 in-store + tax, $8 rebate. for a 5 qt jug in a variety of weights, including 5w-20 (what I needed). Picked up a couple jugs. I have only used Mobil1 in the past when I could get it for a very good price, I haven't had any oil-related issues in any of my engines running Valvoline full synth, Quaker State full synth, and even Super Tech (WM brand) full synth. I have re-built a car (down to the last nut/bolt) from the ground up, swapped engines, blown a few engines up (not oil related, trust me haha...let's just say it's easier to compress a connecting rod than water), so I speak from a broad range of experience.

While I do agree with you, a lot of V-8 and larger V-6 engines do require more than 5 quarts. Average cars, no, but many pickups, SUVs, German cars, and cars with V8s do, so it depends.

My Honda Ridgeline, old BMW 3-series, and Isuzu NPR w/GM Vortec 6.0 V-8 (a very common truck engine) all take more than 5 quarts. Not a problem for me since I usually buy extra when there's a good sale, and saving an open jug to finish off a change is no big deal.
