Since I'm in the Carolinas I have lots of yummy local options, but I will say that it appears that Heinz is not using High Fructose Corn Syrup in their BBQ sauces. At least none on this page.
George's is 8 bucks a bottle tho.
I have. It's like it says: Sweet and tangy with vinegar. I like it.

If you like vinegar in your BBQ sauce or ketchup, you will probably like this. If not, then not.

Don't all ketchup recipes include vinegar and sweeteners, making them sweet and tangy? Does this just have more vinegar, giving the effect of the mixture of vinegar and ketchup on fish and chips?
This is very vinegar forward and not at all like ketchup. It is like the cheaper pork BBQ sandwiches you used to get some places like cafeterias. I like this and it can be used on a lot of things.

I appreciate the attempt from Heinz. But anybody who knows SouthEastern NC BBQ will tell you, there is no ketchup in the BBQ sauce.
I am not sure there is any ketchup in this at all. It com,es off like a vinegar forward sauce. It is a little watery and not as thick as Heinz Ketchup. When I buy things I do not care if they taste like their influence as much as I care if I like it. Like I see NY pizza advertised a lot of places and it is not like the NY pizza I have had but if it is good I like it.

Where does the word "ketchup" appear anywhere on the label? Just because it's Heinz doesn't mean it's ketchup

For those poor souls who have never been blessed with the experience of NC BBQ, we take it VERY seriously. Big Grin
Some of the best memories from college are of tailgating at ECU with B's BBQ.

If you are in NC and want to sample Heaven on Earth....try these stops.
I can personally vouch for B's and Wilber's.
(I warn you though, B's closes the doors when they sell out for the day..and that can be early on Gameday)

There's no ketchup in this bbq sauce either. You see the word ketchup anywhere?

What do you dislike about high fructose corn syrup?
HFCS has been demonized because of its link to obesity and metabolic syndrome. There is some science behind the idea that large amounts of fructose can promote these effects. However, people over simplify the issue. HFCS 55 is 55% fructose and is often used in sweetened beverages. Because sweetened beverages can be consumed in large quantities without having much impact on other intake, people can consume a lot of calories and sugar (including fructose) in HFCS-sweetened drinks. It's important to note that "regular" cane sugar, the kind most people use in their homes, is 50% fructose - not a huge difference. HFCS also exists in a 42% form, which is less fructose by percent than table sugar.

Ironically, regular corn syrup also gets lumped in to this demonization, despite being 100% glucose (0% fructose). It's more meaningful to just focused on having a better diet overall, with less intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and refined carbohydrates rather than narrowing the focus to HFCS.

What's in that sauce? No tomato sauce/paste/puree?
Eastern NC is mainly apple cider vinegar. It's not a sauce that clings. It is apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. That's it, but it works with pulled pork. Western/Piedmont/Lexington NC adds a little ketchup to the same sauce, such as the George's mentioned. It's all personal preference. The next time you smoke a pork butt try making a batch of both. It's the easiest sauce in the world to make. It's best made in advance and doesn't need refrigeration. I usually put about a cup of sauce mixed in with the pulled butt and let people add their own after if they choose. You'd be amazed how well it incorporates. There are hundreds of recipes online for both styles and all quite similar.

I'm a big fan of Kansas City's Gate's BBQ sauce with my pulled pork as well. It's a "Gussied up ketchup" BBQ sauce that will change your mind about using ketchup as a base. The garlic powder and cumin transform it from tasting like ketchup. This recipe from Ollie Gates himself is close to what they sell. https://www.marthastewart.com/340...ecue-sauce

Lillies ENC sauce is pretty good too, all the Harris Teeters in the VA area carry it. Really though the sauce is pretty simple to make:
1 cup white vinegar
1 cup cider vinegar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce (e.g. Tabasco™), or to taste
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper

HFCS just tastes bad though. Feels like it clings to my mouth and throat or something, I just cannot stand it. I don't think I'm alone in this opinion.

I honestly didn't know vinegar or mustard based bbq sauces had sugar at all. I try to use them vs the "ketchup" or "red" sauces, and the ones I've seen have like 0 or close to 0 calories on the label.

such as?

I looked and couldn't find any that weren't a little pricey and specifically labeled as zero sugar or keto. IMO it doesn't need 8g per serving or higher. I've had great mop and loose sauces that weren't sweet in restaurants or homemade. Just not from bottles.

Who said this has ketchup in it?
It's not going to literally say 'ketchup' in the ingredients but the ingredients for ketchup are effectively in the sauce. If you look for tomato based sauce recipes they will often have you start with ketchup instead of trying to reinvent the wheel with tomato paste and spices.

Not the real stuff. It's just vinegar with some spices. Some recipes might have a little tomato in it for flavor but even then it's like 4 parts vinegar to 1 part tomato so barely there for flavor. Your 'typical' tomato based BBQ sauce would be something like the reverse, with 4 parts tomato to 1 part vinegar. It's a tomato based sauce with some vinegar tang.

Personally I'm not a fan of genuine Carolina bbq sauce. Even when I'm in the carolinas they'll usually have a tomato heavier option for vinegar sauce available that I pick. The one I hate the most though is mustard based but I hate mustard so that checks out.

That's what it looks like. A very vinegar heavy version of a regular bbq sauce. A 'real' carolina bbq sauce is almost all vinegar though with maybe a splash of tomato for flavor.

I'd just make your own from a recipe online. It's very basic.

Being about Heinz ketchup, lemme add:

If you can get your hands on Canada made ketchup, you should try it.

We were up on Canada last summer, and took back a whole case of their Heinz ketchup …. has a Canadian Maple Leaf on the neck label.

Tastes really great, you might like it, too.
Isn't Canadian Heinz essentially just Heinz with real sugar? I get Simply Heinz for that reason.

Since I moved to Tennessee, I miss Eastern NC BBQ. The best I've found is Scott's BBQ sauce.
