If you're looking to play a JRPG, these are fine.

Zesteria and Berseria are in the same universe, Berseria is a prequel to Zesteria, but you want to play them in release order ideally else minor spoilers and cameos.

Zesteria imo isn't that great of a story, probably my least favorite of the bunch.

Symphonia is a classic in terms of story, but it has the most dated gameplay due to it being the oldest.(PS2/Gamecube generation). What I can appreciate more of the older tales 3d games is dungeon puzzles were more complex and more interesting, so if puzzles is your jam, you may like the older titles more.

Vesperia is the middle ground, as it was a PS3/360 generation game and the story is standalone and focuses more of a Vigilante vs Knight dynamic of being a "hero"

Newer tales titles tend to have more interesting battle mechanics, so if you prefer battle, then the newer title would be better. the newest being Arise, and the newest named here would be Berseria (PS4 generation titles)

personally, I think Vesperia is the best choice for introduction as is slightly less dated than Symphonia combat wise, but retains most of its dungeon puzzle design and completely standalone as a story, so you wont feel like youre missing out on anything else by the time your done (as Symphonia has a sequel (Dawn of the New World, controversial story, but decent gameplay) and Zesteria/Berserias world is shared.

Any suggestions for somebody new to this type of game? I've mostly done FPS but I want to expand my horizons.

Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition is $2.45 (with code AKS8) at Eneba when you choose other seller offers and click the first seller on the list.
Tales of Vesperia DE [eneba.com]

Tales of Zestiria is also on sale at $3.30 (with code AKS8) at Eneba when you choose other seller offers and click the first seller on the list.
Tales of Zestiria [eneba.com]

Add both to cart and the total should be $5.75.
Use zip code: 99710 (Alaska) for that sweet sweet tax free purchase.

These are not the best turn-based JRPG out there. I would suggest trying something like FFVII or P5R first.

Are those codes only associated with specific games? Tried to use some in the past few days but even during their holiday discount codes none of them worked on the games I purchased.

Yes, not all games will work with the discount code. I think they have only specific games meant for the discount to apply. The only way to know is when you try to apply at check out. The code worked for both of those games.

These are not turn based games. They have encounter battles with action based combat.

Thanks for the info! The only one I have previously played is Symphonia. But I just picked up the others.

Using another state's zipcode you don't live in is tax fraud, so I would not recommend that to anyone living outside of Alaska.
