I've never gotten a 16TB that had PWDIS and necessitated the tape, SATA adapter, or pin-snip mod, but there ARE variants of the drive that support PWDIS so this is a possibility. Expect 262MB/s max transfer rate as per the mfr, although approx 250MB/s is pretty normal for large files if you haven't entirely filled the drive.

It is pretty cheap for a large external though. As always make sure you have AT LEAST one other copy of your data. Any drive can fail at any time without warning.

I've got over $10,000 USD in WD drives personally, roughly half of them from ebay refurb, and all but 4 were "shucked."
86 drives in total, all 8TB +. Some are more than 6 years old.
I've yet to have a single failed drive.
Give this a look instead of spouting off nonsense:

Specifically, scroll down to the bit about drive failure by manufacturer - then take a look at the last three years.
Thing is, they were returned. Some were definitely returned for bogus reasons. But I'm guessing half were returned for legitimate problems. Some were user error or easy stuff, some harder stuff, and some intermittent issues that are hard to diagnose. Those are the ones that I'd be worried about. They're going to pass their refurb process but cause problems for the user down the road.
