does anyone know if you can select your area code when signing up? I want an area code in another state but not sure if they default to your local billing area.

As I recall, you enter a zip code at activation and then you're offered the area code(s). So, yes, you can.

Agree. As long as the area has good T-Mobile network, mint is awesome.
my house has bad tmobile coverage but you just call support they run a few analysis then ship you a free hotspot. There is a small deposit like $30 that is refunded whenever you return it. That instantly gave me 5 bars at home for voice calls. This completely changed my view of tmobile

I need a SIM card for my car using maybe 5 minutes or less of phone calls per months and 1GB of data. Is there any cheap plans basically just to keep a number alive like $2/mo?
One option that hasn't been mentioned here - if you don't have a phone to begin with, you can get a tracfone with a year of service at QVC/HSN for $60-80.. It's still $5/month or more, but includes the phone, if you can get by with minimal usage.

However, 2fa is going away....
How do you figure 2fa is "going away"? I know some people point to more secure versions of 2fa than Text/SMS, but much like voice phone calls (which may not be more secure, but is more accessible), most banks/etc don't even offer that.

I've used a pay-as-you-go basic plan from H2O Wireless before. It worked as an emergency backup. It's $10 with a 90-day expiration.

5 cents talk/text
10 cents per MB of data.
That $10 would only get you about 100MB (as opposed to 1000MB), so if you're actually using 1GB of data it's an awful idea. But if only needing to randomly check e-mail or send a couple photos, it can work.
It worked out to be around $3-4 a month. I believe they're based off of the AT&T network.

Only issue I've had with Mint is when I renewed for another year they didn't start it the day after my plan would expire like their messages said they would, they renewed it on the day I signed up for another year. That means I lost three days. So don't renew until it's already expired or on your last day.

Is there any MVNO comparable to Visible? I need the unlimited hotspot, so that's who I have now, but the Tmo network is much better where I am. But I am not aware of any unlimited hotspot like Visible offers, on the Tmo network. Does anyone know of any? Or is Visible the unicorn? lol

Check red pocket on ebay. They were selling I think 1gb pm annual plan for $90 and 5gb a little over $100.
I'm sure a lot of other carriers do this but I know for sure Red Pocket sells your personal data as I've seen my number and my name and address attached to it on searchable sites. It shows as AT&T being the reporter so I know its RP. Something to consider.

I'm trying out Helium Mobile with 30GB of high speed data then throttled afterward for $20 a month and includes 5GB of hotspot. Runs on T-Mobile network also and so far has been just as good as T-Mobile itself. I use it as my supplemental coverage when I don't get Verizon coverage and use Helium as a backup and worth the $20 a month.
