During February, guests aged 65 and older receive free admission to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Take an exciting expedition on Africa Tram to spot herds of giraffes and rhinos, wander among kangaroos and discover platypuses at Walkabout Australia, explore the bamboo forests of Tull Family Tiger Trail, take a stroll around Mombasa Lagoon, and relax with refreshments on the patio at Kijamii Overlook. There's a beautiful world of sights to see where each moment can change a lifetime—all at the Safari Park!
Guests 65+ must present a valid photo ID at turnstiles for free entry. Parking not included.
People think of the zoo as just a place for animals, but specifically - the San Diego Zoo (not the safari park, aka Wild Animal Park) has a more valuable collection of endangered plants in the park than the actual value of the animals. Learned this many, many years ago during a "behind the scenes" special tour of the zoo. Also got to see the food warehouses and go into the elephants bedroom during that tour. Simply unforgettable!
FWIW they have 2 tiger cubs now and they are ADORABLE!
Also, always sit on the far side of the tram (closest to the animals, away from the boarding gate) when you board.
And sit in the first car of a section if you can.
Best viewing with no one around you.
Finally, the park entails a lot of walking, BUT there are ADA stops for mobility impaired guests where they take you from place to place in a van. Ask at guest services.
Just wanted to mention it as this deal is for older guests.
This is the BEST time to go as it will not be super hot!
Enjoy it!

PS; The SD Zoo does kids free in October.
PPS: Also, this is a great time to use the free admission to book a "Safari". You get to go out into the paddock (in a covered truck) with the animals (I go at sunset when they are most active, usually the last tour.)
Getting your picture taken with a giraffe or rhino is incredible. Usually, you need to pay general admission THEN pay for the Safari. Now you still need to pay the upcharge for the safari, but at least the general admission is covered. And before you cheapies complain about the upcharge, the safari is WAY cheaper than going on a photo safari in Africa. AND you are guaranteed to see rhinos!

So then... I go to the aquarium.
(it's like a zoo for fishies)
