Blaster Master Zero is an action-exploration game done in an 8-bit top-down & side-view style that hearkens back to the golden age of the NES.
Using the original 1988 NES title "Blaster Master" from Sunsoft as a base, Blaster Master Zero has many new additions, such as new areas and bosses, new gameplay elements such as extra sub-weapons, improved gameplay, a more robust scenario, refined and expanded exploration mechanics, and more.
These games rock. Zero is a remake of the original NES game with quality of life improvements and more interesting narrative. The sequels iterate on the gameplay and take the series into fun directions
I have fond memories of the NES original which in hindsight is pretty tough, watching my dad struggle to beat the ice boss but always coming up short. Then you run out of continues and it's game over.
The soundtrack by Naoki Kodaka with that signature Sunsoft bass line is one of the all-time greats.
Zero 1 is a remake of the original with some new levels and QoL improvements.
Zero 2 and 3 take the story in a different direction with new weapons, more dialogue, and anime-style boss battles.
Absolutely recommend the trilogy if you enjoyed any Blaster Master game before.

I was just talking with one of my high school students about the original NES game, how it was always one of my favorites. As I am a PC gamer now, I wasn't aware they had made these Zero games for the Switch. Good times.
*Edit: Oh damn, they are on Steam, too....hmmm....*

I played (and didn't love) the Wii remake. This looks far more like an homage/revival of the original, and I just impulse bought the trilogy...
...now I want a remake of Metal Storm
