There is also a free trial (https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/na/) where you can play until lvl 70. There are some other limitation with the free trial, but you can do a lot of stuff before activating the paid subscriptions.

If you are going this route, don't activate the code from the purchase in this post till you are ready to end the free trial.

Obligatory note: There is a very generous trial for this game where you get the base game and a couple of the expansions, I believe up to level 70 where just some of the social stuff is disabled.

However, once you buy this and apply it to your account, you cannot use the free trial.

For a primarily solo player, would this be worth it? I tried WoW back around the second or third expansion, and it seemed like if you wanted to just solo play you were limited to a seemingly never ending series of side quests. I know there's a free trial, but before I even waste my time installing that, wanted to see if I could get a sense for what I might be in for as someone who primarily plays solo.

Honestly I feel like FFXIV is one of the most solo play friendly MMOs. It is very story focused and they have added NPC party members to most of the story required dungeons.
