Guitar Center has the Road Runner RR5TEG guitar case and the RR5TEB bass case in black or espresso brown for $80. Free shipping or pick up in store. (Musician's Friend does not appear to offer this price; a price match might be possible.)
These are not your usual gig bags. There's an outer compartment with a heavy luggage-type zipper going most of the way around the case, for storage of books, capos, and similar accessories. The main compartment has a similar zipper, and the compartment has a plush lining, 20mm padding, a bottom pad that can be removed to accommodate slightly longer guitar bodies (a typical Strat or Les Paul would leave it in), and a neck support pad with locking strap to hold the neck in place while preventing breakage of an angled headstock. The outer shell has rigid inserts to protect against items falling on the guitar.
The shoulder straps tuck away inside a flap to minimize catching on seats or similar when traveling. The handle is thickly padded for easier carrying.
Overall, these are easily twice the overall height (thickness) of a typical gig bag with much better protection. It's not a hard case, but it doesn't weigh as much as one, either.

I should say I have one of these, and it's very heavy duty (and also heavier than you might think)
Link to the bass bag in espresso if you want to save $10 more bucks as poster above mentioned
