Everything I have read suggestions this is not great for that. The z6 will outperformed motion shots

Incorrect. The r10 does have limits on video recording. Normal: 2 hr. High Frame Rate movie (Full HD 120/100fps): 30 min. If the camera's internal temperature becomes too high the recording time may reduce. 4K 30p HQ: Approx. 50 min.
I shoot U10/12 basketball with a D7500 (8 fps) and a 50mm f/1.8. I find f/2.8 is too slow unless it's a very well lit gym. So that's like $800. Takes great images but wish I had a zoom. Still, 50mm works great on the half court, you just can't get good transition shots.
So you really want a full frame camera, f/2.8 zoom and a better viewfinder than Z5/6/7, which are 60 Hz. You want a Z8. Tight budget and indoor basketball are not a good mix.

2 SD card slots, in-body stabilization, and the lens lineup for Nikon Z is excellent. I would probably recommend the 24-70 f/4 lens for around $400 used.
Plus, if you have F-mount lenses, you can buy an adapter and those will still work on the Z mount.
