With the exception of specific types or portions of clothes, like capes, shawls, robes, or parts of tops where the loose fabric is only an accent, everyday clothes are designed to fit your body's measurements. Believe it or not, you can make a pair of properly fitting pants that are just as comfortable, if not more so, as these and aren't unseemly to wear outside the house.
After having our basic needs met, our everyday surroundings have more impact on our well-being (not just happiness) than anything else. If you had a choice, would you prefer to be surrounded by tacky amateur graffiti and gaudy billboards or unspoiled nature and beautiful architecture?
There are plenty of very comfortable clothes that don't look so ugly. There are clothes that actually fit your body and yet are also flexible and cozy like sweatpants.

I'm not sure why my preference for certain clothes should offend you any more than a preference for spicy food or rock music. I'm not making a judgment about people wearing these clothes, except to the extent that they've decided it's wrong or silly to care about whether their outfit is likely to have a positive or negative effect on other people.
There's a misguided ideal, in this country in particular, of the "noble" individual who does what he wants regardless of what other people think. It always reminds me of a friend from high school who told me he "doesn't give a f___ what other people think." The problem is, unless you remember to reflect frequently on your behavior, you risk turning admirable traits (authenticity, acceptance of people who don't fit the mold, etc.) into the opposite. In his case, being "himself," unconcerned with other people's perceptions of him, had the effect of alienating other people, not bc they were stuck up, but bc he became a total jerk.
Some wear because they like the comfort rather than focus on impressing others.
