I'm from central Florida and knew what venison was by about age 7. I think we're just being trolled.

Is it really 'unnecessary' though? It's preserved, unrefrigerated meat - got to put something in it as a preservative if not using modern chemical preservatives, salt has been the go-to preservative for meat for millenia. Do you have a preferred suggestion for a low or no sodium preserved meat product instead?

Depending upon which Jack Links peppered product you are talking about, one has the same amount of sodium, but some others do have less. The one with less sodium has a lot more sugar, plus MSG, & sodium nitrite. Some of them have wheat too. At least the sodium in this product is sea salt, & there is no MSG, etc.

Fat & sodium are not the enemies. The right kind of both are essential to good health. The standards set by the agencies that approve things like Twinkies, but say natural things are bad, are not reliable sources of health advice. Their recommendations & standards are funded by those with everything to lose if people knew the truth because they could not peddle their drugs & other toxic substances.
Just FYI, there's nothing wrong with MSG. Look up why it was originally demonized and you'll be surprised. It was canceled before canceling was a thing, because 1 guy made a unfounded assumption.

I've heard somewhere that in English, animals are generally named according to the German root, but the meat we obtain from the animal is taken from French: pig/pork, cattle/beef, deer/venison, chicken/poultry,
The German words do appear in English, but as less-used synonyms. None of the words in your list.

For example, the German word for pig, Schweine, became English swine. Word for dog is Hund, became hound. Word for chicken is Huhn, became hen.

The bickering in this thread made me curious enough to order and try so I too can be an informed participant in the bickering.

Ohhh this is a fun game. Front runner is California BUT that seems to obviously and I feel like they have wildlife there. So I'm gonna go Southern instead. Florida?
I think it's more likely there are just too many dads absent form their kids lives. What dad doesn't know what venison is?

Whoa whoa. As an LA (city, not state) native - I know what venison is because of the European influence on the city. Although im not a fan of this, lamb, or rabbit unless cooked in specific ways.
