Thanks for posting. We are in the market for a gaming desktop but I am so lost looking at specs and am not sure how to evaluate them. Isn't 8gb ram low? Can it be upgraded? I realize this computer is super cheap and likely is not a great option but just wondered what baseline specs we should be looking at generally. Thanks for any guidance!

As this is an entry level $400 gaming desktop, it can't be expected to keep up with the highest game settings. I would recommend adding at least another 8GB of DDR4-3200 RAM out of the box for gaming duty.

That being said, this is a compelling deal for low budget users. It's not easy to find a new gaming platform desktop with this feature set, a respectable processor, and discrete GPU at this price.

Sure thing. If your budget allows, you may want to consider this CyberPower that's marked down at Walmart to $699.00. For another $300 you get a 1TB SSD, a very capable RX 6700 graphics card, 16GB of RAM, and a nicer RGB case. It's arguably well worth the extra $300. The only problem is that you have to find one in-store; they're sold out for shipping but quite a few stores have them in stock. You can check their website for in-store availability at stores near you

The Radeon RX 6400 is so low on the totem pole you can't really consider this a gaming PC. Only suitable for older games that don't require much GPU capability... (think Minecraft).

Without checking benchmarks, I'm not even sure it's an upgrade over the iGPU in the Ryzen 5 5600G. Stick Out Tongue

Not trying to knock this deal; even if it was in stock, consider it an entry-level PC rather than a basic gaming rig.

If folks are thinking of putting in a dedicated graphics card, know that the PSU appears to be 350 watts. Whether that works with the card you want to install... it'll depend

This is fine for a budget gaming system - but it really is a budget system.

Just to level set broadly - a system that can comfortably play 1440p games is going to set you around $750-$1000 (depending on what you need, deals, refurb or not etc). It would play some games at 4K - but not all on high/ultra settings.

A system that will play AAA at 4K will be more like $1000-$1200.

Graphic card chips are still very expensive and in demand, and this is keeping prices high.

Here is some good rtings data on the differences and compromises (and remember, most will need a compatible monitor, so prices above are just for the system itself).

I'm really tempted to pick this up to slap together a gaming rig for my daughter, but HP is notorious for having proprietary junk that hamstrings their builds. HP has even tied their RAM clock speeds to proprietary RAM sticks on some desktops.

I have my old GTX 1070 and a 500W PSU that I would be swapping in, I just wish I knew if they would fit/be compatible. Has anyone pulled one of these open? How much room is in the case for swapping the GPU? Is the PSU some rinky dink micro-size that can't be easily swapped out? Is there any breathing room at all for swapping in generic parts, or is everything so cramped that you can't actually upgrade the major components?

I am going to vote to pass on this "deal." This is not a good option. These cases utilize proprietary motherboards, power supplies, and cases, they cannot be upgraded/swapped except to other HP parts designed for this case platform (several types that have a different front panel). The 6400 is very low end and does not handle much graphics, AND it is further hampered by needing PCIE Gen 4 bandwidth due to limited lanes, but the 5600G CPU it is paired with is limited to PCIE Gen 3! So you'll lose ~20% of the performance of that 6400 right off the top. You can upgrade the CPU cooler (with some research, ahead - you'll need M3 x 20 screws, and the Intel bracket despite being an AMD system) and ram. Because this GPU doesn't require additional power from a PCIE cable, it looks like the PSU is about 300W, and wouldn't be able to handle a better GPU that'll require the additional power. I've tinkered around in these HP cases (https://i.imgur.com/OKJTOyz.jpg?1), but that's because I got killer deals and was part swapping and just tinkering around. This isn't worth it. Get a used better system if this is a hard budget line, or save up a little more and get something much better.

Thanks everyone for all of the input - it is so appreciated! We were actually able to find the CyberPowerPC desktop that BabyBubba recommended in stock at a local Walmart. We bought it along with an LG gaming monitor (another Walmart slickdeal) and couldn't be happier. Thanks again for all of the guidance!
