Snagged a kit. Always wanted to learn how to weld. Seems like such a useful skill. Any weekend welders out there with some tips & tricks?

These are the leftovers from a kit that used to include acetylene and oxygen tanks, but they were Chinese valves and unable to be filled in the states.

I posted about this the other day. If you can get it just buy it. Its a Harris Model 85 torch with gauges. I just ordered some propane tips to run propane instead of Acetylene.

It can weld, but oxyfuel welding is painfully slow

I'm an amateur myself trying to learn. It's not the easiest and not the hardest but I think many people start with "stick" welding (also called shielded metal arc welding). That doesn't require gas and has a lot of utility although it's less than ideal for very thin metal. Pros may laugh at this but you can get a 120/240v Chinese inverter welder from Amazon for a little shy of a hundred bucks. I got a yeswelder and it seems to work well other than the actual amperage being ~10% lower than the setting. Those do DC which is almost always preferable to AC welding, though you could grab a big old reliable AC "buzzbox" welder off Craigslist. I don't know much about oxy acetylene other than it seems cool but you have to rent or buy gas cylinders.
