This is such an asinine comment. All sardines don't come from the same place. They definitely inhabit various waters. Primarily two things effect taste of canned fish; the waters from where they are caught(which influences what they eat and what pollution they are exposed to) , and the cleaning and canning process itself.

To think just because sardines comes from sea water, they must all taste the same is literally the dumbest thing I've read all week.

Costco has their Season brand sardines for 10.99 this month. 6 count 4.375 oz can. While not as good of a deal, the quality is much better. Sardines and saltines, yummo!

It's only seems ridiculous because you're not using your brain. You realize that the difference is in the cooking and canning process, right? Not in the raw fish?

A lot of quality comes from how the fish are treated after catching. I mean in terms of handling, processing, etc. Are they chucked around or packed into very deep containers that compromise their quality? Did they sit on the dock a long time? Processed nearby, on the ship, or shipped halfway across the world to be process elsewhere? Were they subject to temperature fluctuations along the way? Packed in salt or oil or water, and if oil what kind of what origin/quality? Ditto the salt. All of that can make the difference between a tasty fish and bland mush that only barely looks like any of the dozens of species of fish that we call sardine. Hell, are they even any of the recognized species we call sardine or are they any fish small enough to fit in the can?

"Sardines" is the generic name for an enormous number of fish species. From Wikipedia: "The FAO/WHO Codex standard for canned sardines cites 21 species that may be classed as sardines.[8] FishBase, a database of information about fish, calls at least six species pilchards, over a dozen just sardines, and many more with the two basic names qualified by various adjectives." Those are just the official standards which you can bet your patootie is not followed by all manufacturers.
