I'm guessing this is only for groupon accounts that have existed for a while. I was going to buy both Windows & Mac.. but I guess not.

Why are you even asking?
"The key worked" does not equal "you're the new owner of a valid software license for life". Install key codes are not software licenses, and all software license categories are not the same. Having found, or bought online, a BMW key does not mean you own a BMW for life, but we could get some months or years out of it.
People and companies pay different software prices depending on status (developer, non-profit, student, large corporation, government, etc.), by volume purchased, and by term (one-year, student-years, MSDN developer annual fee payments, etc.). Sadly, software today is more connected to the cloud (for updates, upgrades and authenticity checks) than left alone on one's computer. It was better in the old days when software could be left alone. Not anymore.
Try not to purchase with your real personal details, as Groupon (and the others) feed your details to the internationally-based code re-distributor. They're not being sent to Microsoft for obvious reasons.

Why are you even asking?
this is a 'seat' from a site license. it is not legal to sell it per microsoft licensing agreement. it can stop working at any time. you might have it happily work for as long as you need it, you might not, but you are most certainly participating with something not legal. and if you are ok with that then why not just get a completely free version from bitorrent? that's probably what the seller did!
also, paying microsoft monthly comes with continuous version updates (microsoft does not sell "2021" anymore).

Just got a new win11 pc and it's plugging office 365. Having an EDU email I can get it for $3/mo, and it comes with 1tb onedrive. OR 2021 version and no onedrive. I probably wouldn't really use much of the true web aspects of o365 but I use onedrive pretty regularly (but don't pay for it currently)
Personally I have fallen in love with onedrive the past few years. It works the way I always wanted "dropbox" like services to work. Which is to say it feels pretty seamless moving from computer to computer to phone to another computer. I login and it's basically like I am working on one machine, all my files are always there all the time.

It's interesting to me that Groupon an Amazon owned company is involved in these kind of shenanigans. Not that I expect better out of Amazon, I don't. I just figure fear of MS would keep them away from these.

For folks who use more advanced excel features that require the desktop version, $3 a month for 365 sounds like a steal. The onedrive storage is also a great addition.

I was one of the fools that purchased a key for office a few years ago just to have to revoked a bit more than a year later. Called MS and in my case it was a technet subscription key that was sold to me. I gave them the seller info, which could have also bought these keys on the gray/black market.
In general I advise against these... How can a $400+ product sell this cheap? Think about it

With that said, I prefer 465 now as mostly because that is what MS is focused on supporting, with Office 2021 with security updates through Oct. 2026. MS constantly updating and patching 365. 2021 is not getting the love from MS, and what you buy is what you get, but this is a very compelling price.
