Bought a little De'Longhi manual espresso machine similar to this for about $50 some years ago. Still soldiering on, pulling daily shots.

Lol. you have much to learn, grasshopper. What you're describing is DRIP coffee. Espresso machine is a closed off system that builds about 20 bar internal pressure and utilizes solenoid to trigger a water pump to pump hot water under very high pressure to extract coffee from grounds.

Cheap machines have frequent and early water pump and solenoid failures.

bought this item in thanksgiving, not recommended, confusing functions of buttons, worked as expected sometimes.
always lots of water was left in filter.
Finally, bought a similar one on amazon for $90, much better

What you just described is hot water going through coffee.
