Honestly they don't look like a bad deal. Know nothing really about hiking shoes but the tread on these seem shallow for what they are meant for, no?

That was my first thought as well. It's almost like these are more for people who want to present the image of a hiker. I'd never wear these hiking in actual mountains but I can see maybe someone using them for city trails or walking around town.

Long time REI member here. Unfortunately, the REI branded items have not lived up to my expectations in the last couple of years. I do not have experience directly with these shoes, but their other shoes, bags, etc do not hold up well.

I agree. REI products seem like they are projecting the image of outdoor activity, but in daily use, it falls short. That's not to say there aren't some diamonds in the rough, but most of the time, the products appear to be designed by committee, rather than users.

Stopped at my local REI yesterday (East Bay) and saw these at the $41. price and tried on a pair. Very comfortable and light boot so bought a pair of 12W. Did a 3 mile walk and wow, no break in needed, foot bed is good quality and removable/replaceable insole as needed. Made in Vietnam so I'm fine with that. The overall quality is excellent. Since I do a lot of walking/hiking, I'm getting another pair. At this price and especially when one uses a coupon or their points, it's a sweet deal. IMO these are much better quality and fit compared to Columbia. They have a lot of men's/women's hiking boots on sale too. Also grabbed a set (front/rear) Avid brakes on a good price too. BTW, the color of these are muted so nothing outlandish in that regard.
