Certainly, most old retro non-Nintendo consoles will also work just fine. New 3DS can additionally run New 3DS games (very small selection) and has more processing power for potential emulation.

Cons:
- touchy Dpad
- timing of release (RG35XX)
- software/OS
- color options
- better options for a little more ($90 Powkiddy RGB30)
Basically really good hardware for the price. Software/OS support is lacking, but future improvements to this could make this device a gem. If I didn't already have 5+ similar devices… I'd definitely consider this at such a great price.

Something like this would be much easier to have handy and play more often on downtime plus the battery life.

You're comparing apples to oranges
with that said I love my 3ds for the things it can do and for what it is, but not a good comparison
There are options beyond New 3DS / New 3DS XL and 3DS / 3DS XL. There's also 2DS / 2DS XL, which works great if you don't care about 3D, and can run anything the 3DS can run. You can pick up the cheapest 3DS or 2DS for around or less than $100. Refurbished 2DS XL could be had for $100 even 4 years ago. Nowadays, could grab an old 2DS for $50-$80.
If you want even cheaper and don't care about 3DS titles at all, you can also pick up older consoles like the DSi, for instance. But certainly far less versaility in what you can run. 3DS/2DS family is the gold standard, and definitely worth getting over the others.
