I use mine almost exclusively to store meats and prefer a chest freezer over an upright. I can store long cuts of meats like racks of ribs or briskets without any issues. It's usually not too difficult to dig something out either. I'll often have several chicken packs or bags from costco, spare ice, frozen foods that take up a lot of space. For smaller items you can use the storage baskets that usually come with freezers or buy aftermarket ones. The chest freezers also hold the cold in better when opened. I store all the things I use more often in my fridge freezer drawer and long term in chest freezer.
Compressor technology has changed over the years to become smaller and more efficient. Older models with larger compressors and coils had less of a problem adjusting to a wide temperature range.

Modern compressors don't handle extreme cold or heat very well, so they overcome this with either a sturdier compressor or (most likely) better insulation.

For anyone considering a dedicated freezer, please look into cheaper/smaller upright freezers, vs chest freezers. They're a little less efficient but way easier to navigate.

We just upgraded from chest to upright and couldn't be happier.

Thanks for the input, we are trying to decide between upright and chest freezer! Just worried an upright wouldn't fit things like large cuts of meat from Costco

We bought an upright with adjustable shelving for this reason. We considered the Hisense CFU14N6AWE at Costco ($450 in-warehouse), and ended up with a Frigidaire FFFU13F2VW for $400 from a local dealer.

You do lose some space going to an upright, so we went from a 7cf chest freezer to a 13cf upright.

Happy hunting!

Some of the very cheap and very small ones have fixed shelving, like the Hamilton Beach HBFRF1100 at Costco (though admittedly I think they did this for efficiency, as the coils run through the shelves).

But I think every other model we looked at had adjustable shelving.

I know it's a thing to put these in a garage.

But what makes a chest garage-ready versus not? Is there any special feature that make it better than other ones or is this just marketing gimicry.

I think this is a difference in use-cases. We had a lot of smaller items in there and and they were always getting lost in the bottom.

Certainly if I was only storing large cuts of meat and ice, I'd have been happier with the chest freezer. There are a lot of advantages (price, efficiency) as you pointed out.

Would also like to point out that a 14cf chest freezer is absolutely enormous. Maybe if you're a hunter or a prepper.

5cf might be too small. 10cf is certainly large enough for anyone I know.

Most of these are rated to about a 100 degree max ambient temp. Unless you live in Arizona I wouldn't even worry about it

fyi a price tracking website shows that these regularly go on "sale". in fact the 14cu model has been this price 7 times since 2021. two times it has been even lower than the current price

We bought one of these a few years back and it completely died little over a year after purchase. Knew it wouldn't last long, but even that was below expectations.
