For once in awhile usage, your smartphone is good enough (probably even better in some respects). This is more of a dedicated device for people who will be using it a lot. IE you are doing a travel vlog and have it strapped to your body, it would be impossible to take a phone call or do other phone stuff with your phone while its recording. If you go white water rafting or surfing, you can mount this and not worry about damaging or losing your $1000 smartphone during action scenes. But yeah, if you just want to take random instargram clips of your dog, then you don't need this.

I see some YouTubers do that and if you can imagine a GoPro getting hit by a tree branch imagine how much more inconvenient it is when your phone gets whacked with a tree branch
