My personal caveat: Don't throw your money away on these license key deals. They are not legitimate or genuine licenses for software. It is a reseller of grey market OEM or volume licensing keys. You are paying for a key that may work but will have restrictions and could end up blacklisted eventually. It's the same as using a pirated key, and just because you paid a few bucks doesn't give you any protection or rights if something goes wrong.

Having said that, I don't know if anyone has run into an issue purchasing or using volume keys, only that if they don't work right away they dispute or request a refund if not replaced. Depending on your usage, this may be a way to run Windows cheaply (although I would still argue this is wasting money) and low risk if it only works for a short time.

There are better solutions out there, but if this is a personal or business computer, you might want to consider another approach.

I highly doubt that Woot (an Amazon company) is participating in this scheme. This is not eBay or some shady website.

Unfortunately, avinyc is correct and your faith is misplaced. These are grey market OEM keys, not retail, and Amazon via Woot is absolutely participating in a scheme. This "deal" is posted about once each month, Woot offers these keys about once each month. Read through comments on previous posts here at SlickDeals, read through the comments on the product page at Woot. These are very much buy at your own risk.

The biggest problem is that the keys are often not valid. If you receive such a key, Woot will either refund you or contact their partner and provide you with a new key. So, you do have some protection granted you aren't outside of their return window. So, if you do buy a key from Woot, redeem it within the return window and do not buy it to hold on to or you will likely be throwing away money if you discover the key doesn't work later.

Given that Woot does partner with 3rd parties, and that plenty of people have reported issues with these keys, it's safe to say you are getting the same exact thing you'd get from StackSocial for about the same price, or online grey market key sellers who sell for a lower price. Why Microsoft doesn't shut these down or actively address this, I don't know. It certainly does add an expectation of credibility being sold by Woot, but it's not. There is a risk that the key might stop working at some point and you would have no recourse, however I think that risk is low. So just be sure to activate right away while you have protection and keep in mind that as an OEM key you likely won't be able to later transfer it to another computer (although Microsoft might allow it if you call and tell them you swapped motherboards).

Don't take my word for it, do your own research if you believe that a genuine license that retails for over a hundred dollars is really going to be priced this low from an authorized reseller. There is some truth to the saying "if it's too good to be true..."

If you want to buy it, go for it. I don't have a horse in this race. I'm trying to give an honest disclaimer where the SD staff should know better.

Eh, used these gray market licenses for many years now on a bunch of computers (custom builds, NUCs, SFF, etc) and occasionally they stop activating which only gets discovered when you rebuild the PC or try and move the key to another/different build. That said, for $25 (for Pro) even if they have to be repurchased every few years (2-5+) it's still a WAY better deal than paying Microsoft $199 for Windows 10 Pro!

Just make the move to Linux. Microsoft really doesn't care much about these schemes anyway though, since they harvest so much data from you. Yea there are ways to reduce all the data sent to them, but it is a cat and mouse game and updates will often reset any privacy changes you put in place.

I realize there are some programs that you simply need Windows for, but you could always create a Windows VM and use it for those few programs unlicensed. It will work but limit customization.

I have been using "this kind" of key for years, touch wood, there is no any issue with it.

However, each time SD has a new post like this, I heard posts that said the same thing, eventually these keys will xyz.....

Can anyone please share real experiences other than pass information from other sources.

Regardless, here is my calculation, I purchased a key for $3~4 and I have really bad luck each time, this kind of key only lasts for 2 months? Let's say a good key for $200, for how long I can survive if I keep buying this kind of keys...

By the way, the vendor that I purchased the key from had really good support and was helpful to address my issues. Lastly , windows 10,11 now is "free" if you don't mind not having it activated but just use it as is. I've been using it for months without activation and did not see any difference after the activation (correct me if I missed something here). However, the point is nowadays Microsoft let us use it for free, why they want to catch these, remember there is always effort and cost if they really want to do it. Now the market is different than years ago, Mac OS is free, Linux is free, Chromebook(with os) is free. Microsoft has been doing extremely well these years (see their stock) . They don't pay attention to the price of Windows. And that's why these keys have been around now but not previously.

I was sold a Win11 Pro serial via this deal that was "already used on another device". Not fun.

EDIT: Woot issued me a refund

I had a similar issue and asked for support, the seller gave another key to fix the issue. A couple of months later, I got a new computer setup and wanted to try again the key wasn't working previously and it worked magically

Once you successfully activate it, can it get revoked after the fact?

It can [microsoft.com], but you would not be locked out of windows. Either obtain a genuine key or get another key from the company that sold it to you and see if it happens again.

I purchased the win 10 pro license and used it to upgrade my lenovo legion go from win 11 home (came with the legion go) to pro. it activate fine and then a few hours later, I tried opening excel and I'm not sure if it was a coincidence, but I got a message in excel that windows was not activated. So I went back into the activation screen and it said it was already used in another machine and to call the phone number. So I called it and then activated it.
