I have owned this for a few years and it is great if you understand a few things:

1. This is based on the traditional Japanese bento meal of hot soup, rice, main dish (room temp), salad.

2. Just remember hot on the bottom, cold on top.

3. The large container is vacuum insulated so keeps items at their normal temperature for 6 hours.

4. Hot soup (vented lid) goes on the bottom as seen in the video, not like the picture.

5. Salad goes on the top and is completely insulated from the soup.

6. The plastic bases are microwaveable, not the lids. But with Japanese bento you don't need to heat anything... for other styles you can do it without the lids.

7. It says not to put in the dishwasher, but you can if you don't use high heat setting. Otherwise, just soak all the bowls in a plastic tub with soap for a minute, then wash and dry on a rack. Takes just two minutes.

8. The bag is a bit fiddly, so I rarely use it. You only need it if you want to carry with a strap.
I have a few of these and love them. The overall design is great and does exactly what it says. Biggest potential cons is all of the containers are plastic and some of the seals can be difficult to clean a bit.
The ideal way to use it (per Zojirushi's instructions), is to heat up food separately, fill containers for hot items with hot water while food is warning, then dump out the water and transfer food into the containers. This will pre-warm the containers and they will keep your food warm enough for a solid 6-7 hours if packaged properly.

This is exactly why I have not purchased one. Thanks for sharing your experience with this.

This seems only practical if you microwave in plastic containers. Which isn't a great idea if you have greasy foods.

My daughter uses this every day for school. We fill the main container with boiling water while the food heats up. We put hot water in the soup container if we're not using it for a hot soup or stew and then rest can be rice, pasta, or whatever. He leftover food is still warm when we pick her up from school. Zojirushi makes good shit.

I have this and would recommend it. I used to preheat with boiling water but now I don't bother and just microwave leftovers at home in the containers. Everything stays hot for much longer than needed. Not luke warm but piping hot. It's great.

BPA free does not mean you can warm those plastic containers in the microwave. It's not a good idea.

I have one of these and can confirm that food will come out piping hot at lunch time if stored correctly. The trick is to follow the instructions and stack the boxes in the right order and to pre heat the container with hot(boiling water). I tested it when I first bought it and food was coming out above the hot hold temperature at 7 hours, so it shouldn't have any issues with food safety.

I worry about food spoiling at that warm temperature, and anything hotter I worry about the plastic leaching … I think I'll pass for now.
If you properly seal your food off and heat it up, how could that induce spoiling? You're killing off all the microorganisms and not introducing any new ones
