Ruined? Try using white vinegar and Q tip to clean off the leaked residue, let it dry and should work again with new batteries.

Yep. Duracell has ruined more of my kid's toys than any other battery.

Clicked through just in case C batteries were also on sale. Alas, no. However, I found a pretty good price on 12 Rayovac C-cell batteries for $9.19 (after 15% S&S). I've always had great luck with Rayovac. Aside from my eneloop and fujitsu rechargables, they are my go-to alkaline brand. Thought I'd share in case anyone else is in need.

What items still use D Batteries?
Large Flashlights?
Certain toys?
So much has gone to rechargeable, integrated batteries so I'm curious.

Maglites, one of the greatest and best flashlights on the market uses D-cells. They're one of the greatest because they're all-rounder flashlights that are designed to take a beating (or give one) and are BIFL quality. Now with the new LED bulbs and with some customizing they're just as good as those "rechargeable" USB-C ones but last longer in storage and while being used.

Even my best rechargeable flashlights need to be emptied and re-charged every 6 months or so while I only had to change out my batteries on the maglite every 5 years or so and it wasn't because the batteries died but because I wanted it to be at its best in a truly emergent situation.

That's funny. I've had the acid from batteries dissolve the metal of the springs in the contacts. Vinegar isn't going to put metal back where it belongs.

Also, vinegar might clean it, but you still need to neutralize the acid with a base.

These are alkaline batteries. Acid (vinegar) neutralizes the leaked electrolyte.

But, yeah, the springs, rivets, and wires may turn to powder…

Good point, I had forgotten about the non-acidic chemistry of most consumer 1.5v batteries.

I bought for my automatic lid garbage can. I'm on year three and the lid is starting to slow a bit.

Alkaline is the opposite of acid. That is why vinegar cleans the residue.

Car batteries are lead with sulfuric acid, that is why you clean them with baking soda, a base or alkaline chemical.
