Apple uses an SOC (system a on a chip) the ram is on the same chip package as the processor, not on the motherboard like other builders..this means the the acess speed to the ram is exponentially faster than normal PC ram. Most importantly apple controls the entire hardware and software stack. So the OS is incredibly optimized for the hardware. They are literally built for each other. So a PC that may need 16gb of RAM to do a task will only need 8 or less on a Mac.
Same reason iPhones is 4gb of 6gb of RAM while flagship android uses 12 and 16gb.
That being said. 256gb SSD and 8gb or ram WILL limit you with large photo or video tasks. So even though it's a pro. Know it has limits.
You are gaining, fans for cooling vs fan less on the Air, slightly better performance on long running multithreaded tasks.
Be aware the 256 model has only one SSD chip not 2 like the 512gb and above so your SSD speed will be in the 2500Mbs vs 5000ish Mbs. for everyday tasks even light photo and video editing work it will work fine.

Called a Costco in the Seattle area. Was told item was deleted from the system and no inventory in the area.

I'm not a fan of them selling machines with 8gb of ram but they're selling the experience, not the specs, and for many users these will be faster with 8gb than some windows machines with 16GB due to OS and hardware efficiencies and just raw power. For the right user, but not for all users, this is still great value for the price. Personally, I want 32gb and find it super frustrating that it's a $400 upgrade on top of a $2000 MBP.

Well I am into technology
I have MacBook pro
Lenovo carbon X1 & MS surface laptop Windows
And Linux laptop as well.
Let me tell you that MacBook runs faster than Windows I agree, but with 8GB Linux runs much faster than MacBook.
But my Linux laptop cost $400.
Bottom line RAM and SSD become very cheap Apple is not using gold plated RAM, so this doesn't justify the price that's the point.

Sure is cheap, but definitely get what you pay for. 256GB and 8GB is awful. I picked up a 14" 2021 M1 PRO chip 1TB/16GB for $1,200 in December from MicroCenter certified refurb from Apple with 5 cycles on it. Check them near you and see about snagging one. Worth the additional $ over this.
512mb on the hard drive is a minimum require for sure

To say 8GB RAM used in Macbook equivalent to 16GB RAM used in Windows PC is not entirely correct. There is a few people on youtube even did some benchmarking to compare them, check out for yourself (for example, here https://youtu.be/u1dxOI_kYG8?si=ENZdoWHO3SMOC9fJ)

Only Apple fanboys say that and it was mostly true till I guess maybe till the 2012-13 era, after that even Windows improvised a lot in terms of performance and RAM allocation and CPU utilization.

My MacBook from 2015 is 8gb, it becomes very slow, I was thinking to buy a new one. I am shocked to see they are still selling 8gb ones? Maybe i can use another 8 years?

As mentioned, Costco did have a sale on the M2 MacBook Air for $899 couple of weeks ago. I could see it back on sale and possibly as low as $800 to make room for M3.
The M1 Air is a great product (I have one) but showing its age. The M2 Air, bang for bucks is the best deal when it's priced $800-900 (very soon)
I agree - even 900 for air M2 is a better deal than this.

You are gaining the 14" screen vs 13. A micro LED screen vs ips 120hz refresh vs 60, two more thunder bolt ports, much better speakers, fans for cooling vs fan less on the Air, so it's worth the upgrade for just the screen alone. And more ports.

Let's say I'm using a Mac for some development and if I run a DB and Tomcat, Do you think they will use different memory in Windows and Mac ?

Don't spout out B$ just to defend a greedy company. 8 GB is being terrible, just chrome alone will use that up.

Install Linux instant speed upgrade similar to Apple speed. Reason is Unix vs windows
