Nice. I can use this. Price is better than whats on Amazon or Ebay. Maybe you can find something cheaper on Aliexpress, with a bit of digging. Maybe not.

Nice deal. Tempting, but was hopping this supports 40A. I don't want to have to change my charger settings ervrytime I use this.

Buyer beware! This is only an extension cord, and does not include the actual charger with 120V household plug.
That basic backup charger is available on eBay, also $99.00
Only 16A at that low price tho.
I always keep one in the frunk 😁

Post says supports up to 40 amp which should be the minimum. Great price but not worth the risk if it can't. I also don't want to change my settings either.

Do you want to burn your house down? This is a good way to do it. THIS cable may be rated for additional load capacity, but, if the cable you're connecting to which is off of your charger isn't rated for the increased distance this adds, you can have major problems. I would stay away from any type of extension cords for EV chargers.

The EV dealership explicitly told us not to use any type of extension cords. Feel like this is too much risk.

My charger supports 48 amp… what happens if you plug it in? It doesn't automatically derate?

I'm not seeing how this is relevant at all... the termination point of the previous wire is the same. The wire doesn't know that it is connected to more wire or a Buick...

If there is some sort of science I'm missing here, let me know.

Voltage drops as length increases if the gauge of the wire isn't increased, this could cause a device to increase the current to compensate for the voltage drop. The increased current would cause extra heat to be generated.

not likely, they are not smart. remember the level 1/2 EV charger is literally just a light switch, it either opens the circuit, or close it.

the danger is that the wire gauge chart is a matrix to keep the heat under control, meaning certain gauge wire and pass certain amount of current at certain distance.

with, say 14 guage wire, you can pass 8.5 amp at 200 ft, or 11 amp at 50 ft.

so if you charger support 48 amp. it already take consideration of the length of the wire. ADD extension cord to that requires your to redo the calculation and reduce max current accordingly, which those switch are not smart enough to do by themselves. but if you are aware of this, you can reduce the changing current and would be fine.

anyways... J1772 is essentially dead in the U.S. buying anything not NACS at this stage is just wasting money.

Yes, exactly. The further the run, the more heat is generated, but at the end of the wire, not the beginning.

The charger on the wall is more than a light switch. The charger on the wall and the car both control the amperage. The car can ask for 48 and get send 16.

You would be surprised if you ever open one and check for your self.

the only thing charger controls is open or close using a relay, maybe with a fuse, if that's what you meant by controlling current. the entire AC charging and power control is with the car.

some tesla charger do talk to each other, and if you set it up correctly, they can signal to the car that two charger is sharing one 40A circuit, and the CAR then reduce the charging speed.
