  • The theatrical version is in digital HD format. The Ultimate Cut can be streamed at (up to) 4K Ultra HD format.
  • The Apple iTunes version includes access to both the theatrical release of the film with a runtime of 2 hours and 42 minutes; as well as The Ultimate Cut release with a runtime of 3 hours and 35 minutes. Plus, 2 hours of extras including 4 featurettes, The Watchmen Video Journals, Under the Hood - a retrospective look at the biography Hollis Mason and the world of those who stood for hooded justice - and more.
  • A compatible Apple device (Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, etc.) or the Apple TV+ app are required in order to access The Ultimate Cut version of the film (found under the "iTunes Extra" section of the Watchmen theatrical cut page. 
  • This film is Movies Anywhere compatible. However, only the theatrical version will port to other platforms such as VUDU, Amazon, Microsoft, Google Play, etc. You must use an Apple device or the Apple TV+ app in order to access The Ultimate Cut and other bonus features.

I purchased this digital item earlier today and expected both the original version and the iTunes extra version to be HD-digital. Was surprised to find the iTunes extra - "The Ultimate Cut" in 4K-digital.

This is correct. You need to play the movie first then navigate to Extras to play WATCHMEN: The Ultimate Cut. It is also in 4K. You have to tap Info at the very beginning when you play The Ultimate Cut to see the 4K res.

Very true, quite a few Apple users that are not familiar with iTunes extras which basically/usually give theatrical and additional cuts and also extras such as documentary of making of and such, definitely the most awesome thing with buying with them, of course the standard app on smart TV's doesn't show the content, gotta use either PC app, Movies Anywhere app or an actual Apple box/device. Would be nice if they updated the actual Smart TV app to have the ability to watch iTunes extras on the the most widely used app, yep it would, hopefully soon.

Does this mean I can't watch the movie 4K on my LG using the Apple app?

Why would they include it in the app when there trying to sell more Apple TVs.it has always been that way but I buy most of my digital From Apple anyway because they have ththe best prices

If you link and use the Movies Anywhere app then you will be able to access both versions and they should be in correct format yes. Edit: After looking above I realize the only way to get the HD and UHD is by using an Apple TV box, regardless you can at the very least access both versions with Movies Anywhere.

You will only be able to access the theatrical hd version on the Apple app unfortunately.
