No, and i wouldnt say 240mm is a "behemoth".
240mm is a "mid sized" cooler (it's what I'm using). My MSI motherboard has an auto-overclock feature, and it's tied into the cooling system with light color indicating temperature. It's cool when playing Cyberpunk 2077 on high detail and the coolant system is green, then it starts to turn yellow and the fans/pumps ramp up.

No, it's not needed as most people aren't overclocking their CPUs like that, but it's very cool to have.
If I was on AM5 or high-end 13 series I'd try to get a good cooler for a reasonable price and last I checked, this is still one of the best 240 AIOs you can buy. If you don't plan to overclock, at all, then look at the Thermalright Assassin and Phantom Spirit. Probably best bang for the buck right now.

Are these behemoth coolers really necessary for the latest cpus amd & intel for normal use no overclocking?

For the vast amount of users out there, who use mid-tier systems, this isn't needed. Really depends on the CPU you use in their lineup, as well as your use cases though.

If you're using the bottom end Intel Core i3-14100, this is an overkill cooler. However; if you're using the highest end Core i9-14900k, without over clocking, you will end up thermal throttling at some point. There are loads of videos on YouTube about how in some cases, these chips are untenable and can lose performance with even the chunkiest of coolers.

The top end of the lineup runs very hot. Intel especially, high end 12th Gen to 14th Gen Intel Processors can get hit wild temperatures. Even without overclocking; gaming at extreme settings, rendering 3D animations, etc will run those chips VERY hot.

I have this cooler. Works great. Easy install. I love the toned down subtle look over obnoxious RGB lighting. My first AIO

Arctic coolers are great but I would highly suggest paying a bit more or waiting for another sale to get a 280mm setup (2x140mm fans) if your case can fit it. Seems like a small difference but the fans will run cooler and quieter.

I have this AIO (my first one) and love that it doesn't have RGB lights. It's pretty quiet but makes annoying pumping sound under load. It does it's job very well though, on Ryzen 9.

For the Intel 14700K a 240MM AIO (two fans, nominal thickness) is the minimum given the TDP. The Intel will thermal throttle at 100C for an individual core so you won't be frying the chip by running this.

A larger cooler won't necessarily handle a higher TDP, but more fans will certainly make it more capable.

A three fan 360mm setup will not hit the 100C limit. Most games won't come close to topping out the CPU, but video editing will.

Have a couple of 14700Ks, 240 cooler masters, 360 NZKT and water cooler pumps, plus rads of varying sizes. Been meaning to tear apart one of my ML240 to see the lpm of an AIO on this, but a ML240 AIO ($40) can keep the temperatures in check for the vast 90-95% of the time.

Yeah, and 360mm fans will need a monster of a case.

Not at all. Modern CPUs are already clocked close to their limits anyways. The days of regularly winning the silicon lottery are long gone. These coolers are super-stupid.

Actually a lot of the 13 and 14th gen Intel chips come from factory clocked very hot and generating a lot of heat. You can get away with air if you buy a Noctua, but a cheap little heatsink won't cut it without some serious underclocking. Depends on the kind of person you are, but certainly sucks trying to run stock speeds and hitting 100°C instantly.

I suppose it depends on if you are going for performance or looks. So I suppose it would be worth it to many.

IMHO, water coolers are more quite then their fan equivalents. I've seen tests that show many fan coolers can work better... but again, they are going to have larger fans and those fans tend to ramp up in speed much more quickly. Downside to water coolers is that they are eventually going to loose water to even evaporation and you will either need to replace it every 3 years or so it buy another one.

Are they needed? Depends. Sometimes I use two rubber bands when one _might_ do the trick.
