The core game is free and has been so for a long time--those who have ever paid have some extra features and the DLC is bought with points that can be earned in-game. Grind enough and you can unlock virtually the whole thing without paying.
I don't know if I'll get back to it so I'm going to redeem this just in case. That is, after the installer finishes with more than 20k of patches.... (That's how far behind my installation was.)

As for "stealing your stuff" I'm pretty sure that's not an issue. When loot is found it is separately generated for each person. So like opening a chest generates loot for each person that clicks on it that everyone can see. Some items are bound to character/account when they are removed from the chest but there is an option to give the loot to another party member instead. So people could ask to trade loot in the chest before removing it. And I'm pretty sure if someone breaks a trade agreement, reporting to a GM (Game Master) that can look at the chat logs could straighten things out.

I got it working though and did what I always do... paralyze myself at character creation!
