Do not confuse this with the xg 7000 pro, the xg 7000 is a very different drive. The xg 7000 uses a maxio controller (not mentioned in the official specs, but from what I've seen it's likely the MAP1602A) and ymtc nand (most likely 232 layer, but once again kingspec's official specs make no mention). This is a dramless drive with good sequential performance (though write performance can fall off heavily for large write operations) but somewhat more middling random 4k performance, particularly writes. That being said, while its performance is not quite on par with high end pcie gen 4 drives, it's likely sufficient for the average user. It has a 2400tbw endurance rating which is fairly standard for a 4tb tlc ssd, though it only has a 3 year warranty which is lower than the standard 5 years.

Ymtc 128L nand has had issues in the past, 232L ymtc nand is supposedly not affected:

The lack of professional reviews, limited number of customer reviews, lacking information about exact specifications, lack of any sort of firmware updates or utilities on their website, and low brand presence in western markets would lead me to not recommend this drive for use as a boot drive or to hold sensitive information, particularly without robust redundancy/backups. That being said, I'd still personally recommend this drive over the recent deals we've seen on drives using the ig5236 controller, which is infamous for having a variety of issues. For use as a game drive or for other less sensitive purposes this drive seems like a decent deal if you'd actually make use of the newegg giftcard (the $15 giftcard is sent by email 4 days after invoice and expires 90 days after issuance), especially considering how ssd prices have been rising ever since November. For those looking to use this drive with a ps5, based on the specs this drive is ps5 compatible but multiple reviews indicate that the ps5 pops up a warning that the drive doesn't met the requirements and may cause slowdowns. On the other hand, multiple users mentioned it was working fine in their ps5.

Yeah been looking at this drive for over 2 weeks now and haven't taken the plunge.... rather pay 20-40 dollars more for a model I can fully trust with similar speeds.

I have two of these drives. It is a maxio controller. I can confirm the speed and capacity but not the longevity. I have had no issues and use them as steam drives. No issues.

Bought one of these drives during a Christmas promotion. Its pretty snappy as an SSD replacement for my older SSD drive that was full. Obviously too early to tell longevity, but it was painless to copy everything over and its just doing its thing. Normally I buy Samsung SSD and nVME drives so I took a bit of a chance on this. It is used for my game storage so no huge loss if this thing goes south. YMMV.

I was looking at a 2GB version of this same "brand", but got scared away by their obvious name play on Kingston sounding KingSpec. I would only need it as a backup drive...Should I try the 2GB? I think it was around $60.

Great write up! Personally the ymtc part was all that was needed to convince me. One more thing to watch out for in the market I guess...

I bought two of them: 2x4tb KingSpec , and one WD - BLACK SN850X 2TB PCIe 4.0x4

Attachment 14883802

Here are my test results and I do recommend them as good SSDs

KingSpec XG 7000 4TB M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0x4:

versus WD - BLACK SN850X 2TB PCIe 4.0x4:

I doubt anyone wanting to ape another brand for reputation would choose Kingston.

Heard of King Specs brand before but never used it because it sound like a cheap Chinese brand. However this drive is intriguing due to the price point and 4TB is big

It is. Look up KingSpec on Aliexpress. Considered it as white label. The brand means nothing when it comes to KingSpec.
