Make sure to clean the pads and have them damp (not wet) before putting the polishing compound on the pad.
Use a damp (preferably with Rinseless wash) to wipe off after polishing and buff to a shine with a dry microfiber.
I am kind of old school and used Meguiars M105/205 for 2 stage correction, or 3D Speed for a 1 step.
