Same. TurboTax attempts to simplify the process by creating cartoonish situations that take forever to click through and before you know it, you're 5 pop-ups deep to get to an answer that should have been on the first window. HR Block is the way to go if you have limited patience. 😁

My hesitation with any of these online services is that they retain all of your info for 8 or more years, which means any future breaches will include absolutely everything needed for someone trying to steal your tax return, since normally the IRS will verify it's you by asking for info from a previous return.

It's a big target and I don't trust these companies to keep the data secure if they're storing it.

FreeTaxUSA is the pro move—completely free for federal, including e-file. For state it is $15, which includes e-file.

The user interface is really nice and easy to use. I have used it for years.

Stop wasting your money on TurboTax and H&R, which are spending all your money on lobbyists that are keeping tax-filing a difficult and expensive process.

Sure, it's cheaper to snail mail it in BUT most states then say it can take 8 to 12 weeks to get your refund then instead of 1 to 2 weeks. So depends what you want more, to save a few bucks or get your refund ASAP.

You can do that but then you have to make sure to print out the forms, gather all of the 1099s and W2s and possibly other supporting documents to include in the mail. I find it better to just deal with the e-file on state website and be done with it for free than to mail all of that documentation. I wouldn't want them to reject or penalize me for not including one 1099 statement. If you do it through H&R Block or Turbo Tax for that matter, the nice thing is that lot of those forms can be pulled directly from the financial institution so that you don't even need to have the 1099 on hand. But now if you mail it in, then you have to goto each of those places and download and print them out. Again, all options are exist but some may prefer one over the other due to the complexity of your tax return, cost, time, and convenience factor.

Yes everyone has their own unique situation. Self-employed individual here with an occasional investment property sale, so no W2s and 1099s are not submitted (at least they are not in NC). And most years I have to pay so a quick refund is worthless. But some years the form count can be excessive and it does cost more to postal mail.

The $20 state e-file is a huge money-maker and hardly a slick deal by itself. But the convenience is worth it to some.

FreeTax does not upload tax documents from financial institutions or brokerages so its the cheap move for basic returns only not the pro move you suggest.
