I find this to be a great deal, and I will be buying one. But I know what I'm getting into. Once the six months of free instant ink is over, I will buy a cartridge that should last me for years.

I am not against HP instant ink (a purist), I bought one for my mom w/ a 3 year sub (refurb) and it works well and now she pays for the lowest tier because she prints infrequently and does 4x6 photo from time to time. The ink cartridges just don't last if you don't use a lot so rather than me have to deal remotely w/ her issues if there is a problem she calls HP and they send her new carts. HP support is incompetant, and their instant ink app is crap, but if HP actually did a good job I would think more people would actually consider it because if you are a low volume printer and want archive inks for photos it is a good deal if they didn't put all these crazy expiry of pages and carry forward rules. I get why (ink ages) they should just make it more clear and upfront. You don't have to "scam" people, it's OK to be upfront and honest. I know that is not the standard in business, and well it should be. The program has merit, the execution needs improvement.
For ME no way I am buying that I have a mega tank Canon for 4x6 large format pro printers that I refill my own ink, and a color laser 2 gen back (DRM broken) where I can get LD Product toner for 80% discount to Canon and will print 6000 pages for under $30 a color (I paid $85 for CMYK a few months back). However I am a pro user, most people should be perfectly happy w/ a subscription and no fuss.
I did see that the included toner cartridge should be rated for approximately 700 pages [hp.com].
Good luck!

Basically you are trading your data for a subsidized printer. I'm OK with it. If you are not, there are full lines of HP Printers available that do not have this requirement.
It would be nice if HP made a easy designation in the model number to identify these printers. I believe typically the model ends with the letter E , but not always.

Actually none of the HP printers require you to sign up for Instant Ink (at least as of last year) but if you do you have set the printer down the doom path of the SaaS vampire. I don't think the plans are bad tho, I would say they are pretty good for the home user. The toner one is even better. My issue w/ the instant ink is once you sign up the printer is under phone home forever. If you unsubscribe, they should kill the cart and call it a day if you want to use 3rd party ink. Not require phone home forever to try and brutishly discourage 3rd party ink, so I do not buy these for me out of principle. I used to love HP printers.

I think even the 6 months of ink isn't worth as much since normally toner can print 1000 pages, maybe starter carts even over 600 pages.
For normal people this is a year of printing or more.
If buy this just don't allow this printer to automatically update firmware, don't agree to HP+ login or anything. Then just print using the starter carts.
Not sure how long this will work but I rolled the dice for recent SD refurbished HP.
I turned on printer, used screen to setup. Can hit question mark and cancel at got to HP QR code. Then I turned off auto updates and connected to WiFi using screen on printer.
I also setup on Mac PC Chromebook manually, no HP AIO installer. Doing it this way I never got a sign up message. Heck it even scans print on windows 7 classroom PC.
It prints and scans without any HP login so far
I needed to install starter carts or machine wouldn't setup. Then I put generic ink back in.
I'll see how long it allows generic ink to print. It was $33 with coupon for no name Amazon XL ink all colors and black.
It does see these are "altered and not genuine" but all works perfectly. I fear HP will try to update firmware at some point but I've not set firewall to stop and don't want to use USB.
