It's always been like that. I have never stepped into a Costco without having my membership checked.

To be fair, the vast majority of Costco's profit comes from the memberships. This kinda/sorta means that the goods they're selling are at a price where they won't make much if any money. I think the membership fees are pretty fair given the value that I get, even just going to Costco a few times a year. I try to avoid memberships inasmuch as possible, but every year I can easily count that the value I got from my Costco membership exceeded its cost.

Yes. There's occasionally deals on new memberships. If you're married, you can sometimes flip the membership back and forth and keep signing up.

Does Costco ever have their memberships on sale?

Occasionally. Here's a deal that gets you a $20 gift card when you sign up: https://www.groupon.com/deals/cpn...-gold-star

They're super strict about membership deals only being for first-time members, though, so you can't use it to renew even if your previous membership has expired. OTOH Sam's and BJ's run deals where at most you'll need a new email address when you renew.

They always check membership on entry, always have. Probably reduces theft. The new thing is checking your ID photo against your smiling face to make sure its you using the proper card.

The memberships are pure profit, whereas a product the profit is some small percentage.$60 membership = $600 sale, maybe $1200 sale, annually, without the shipping, storage, damage, theft, returns.

The perfect product! Everyone should charge subscription fees... oh yeah, they are. That and the tip scam showing up everywhere, even on hotel booking websites, pure profit. Cause, why not? Ugh

I did not know that. I thought your spouse would also be considered as member when you share the membership.

I signed up after getting a card from my spouse's membership. To be clear, we had canceled her membership before we began my membership. And I should also mention that I haven't done this since pre-pandemic. The discount wasn't enough to go through the hassle.

I recently renewed my membership, I've been a member for many years. I only go about once a month, but the membership is worth it to me.

There are way too many people at my local Costco and it's always crowded, so I say good if they're going to crack down on cheaters, freeloaders and other undesirables that attempt to gain unauthorized entry.

I apologize in advance, just couldn't resist:

If you're a cannibal, and are going to enjoy some Alfred, you don't want to miss out on this:
2-Count 15oz. Rao's Alfred Sauce (it's the Alfred connoisseur's choice)

There are other jokes to be made, but my work is finished here.

The oatmeal alone made it worth for me. Grabbed 5 bags this morning. I might go back this weekend to grab 5 more.

It's worth it just for the gas.

Yeah, this has been in the news the past month or so. Instead of just flashing the card, looks like they'll require scanning. Based on how many people take 2 min just to take their card out to show them currently, I have to imagine the bottleneck that's going to create at the entrance.

I'm curious if that will change the ability to bypass that by telling them you're just using the pharamcy.

Also curious if they'll have non-member shopping with just gift cards scan their Cash Card upon entry.
You could always do this. Get a member to get you a Costco cash card as a gift and you're in. The only part I don't know, because I've never actually done it, is if they make you use the car first for your purchase, or if you can have that scanned and then pay cash and/or Visa.

Hard to compare with Sam's Club if you don't have the price listed.

Wow that reminds me of the local chinese restaurant that misspelled Hunan to: Human Hot Sauce. Yeah, takes me back
